Allies

I'm a little confused by which lists to take allies from.

If an army has allies, does one look at the allied nation's main list or it's "allied contingent" list?

For example, Dacians can have Sarmatian allies. Do you take those allies from the "Later Sarmatian" list on page 39 of Legions Triumphant, where scouts and peasant levy would be available, or from the "Later Sarmatian Allies" list on page 40, where scouts and peasant levy are not valid choices?

Also, in a 4 deep x 3 wide pike block, if a base is lost obviously it comes off the rear rank. I'm assuming that even though that rank still has 2 bases in it, the POA for having a 4th rank of pike is lost. Am I correct in this assumption?

You would take allies from the "Later Sarmatian Allies" list.

As for your second question the file that loses the 4th rank would lose the POA for 4th rank. However if the other two files still have 4 ranks then those two files would still gain the 4th rank POA.
