A few pre-purchase questions

Post by Major SNAFU_M »

Hi all,

While I am usually focused on heavy war games, I played PG back in the day and I was looking for something lighter to do when traveling for work and also to introduce my son, who finds the heavy games a bit too much to start with.

I also like the fact that I can go back and forth from iPad to PC.

PLayed the demo and was amazed at how addictive this game is.

So a few questions:

Replayability - is there any randomness to the scenarios in terms of where units are place or what the goals are? Or it is a case that once you have played a scenario, you are done with it. I tried out the tutorial on a friend's system and my impression was that it was the same steps each time when I replayed it a couple of times. But that is the tutorial and may not reflect the full game itself.

I also noticed a number of times when I would attack a city with defenses and enemy infantry, that the enemy infantry would leave prepared defenses to advance into clear terrain to engage my units. This seems a very poor choice. I understand there are variances in difficulty and AI settings. IT there a combination of these setting that will at least make things like this very unlikely?

Do mods and custom scenarios require you to have all DLC, or do some/most work with just the base game?

Is there anyway, other than renaming every core unit, to be able to see easily on the interface, which units are core and which are not? It just takes time to rename them. It would have been great if the rename dialog would at least auto populate with the existing name so you only had to make your changes and not retype everything.

Thanks in advance for your consideration and answers,

I'll try to answer your questions

Replayability : Except for your own units that you can deploy at the start of a campaign scenario the AI units are at the same spot and the goal of each scenario is the same. However I've replayed the grand campaign at least 4 times and will play it a 5th time with the updates that have kindly been made available. I've build various core forces and have tried multiple difficulty settings so in that regard there is replayability . More importantly there is a huge amount of mods available so there's plenty to play.

The AI can and does behave very stupid at time, and very smart at times, you can fool the AI at times, it will then predictably do the same thing over and over. It's up to the scenario designer to script how a unit can behave in various situations.

As I haven't played all the mods available and I though have almost all the DLC's I cannot answer this for sure. New units can always be added without having to own any DLC. New maps the same thing so unless a new scenarion re-uses a map from a DLC then you should be OK to play any mod.

Core have a distinctive strength counter. There's probably a mod that will emphasize this better.

I can comment only on my own opinion and experience. For this game on a scale of 1-10, 1 being lowest and 10 highest I would rate it 9-10. Why I think this game is good, the details as below;

Replayability, the content is heavy especially Grand Campaign hence even after playing around 15-16 times I still find it hard to remember where is the enemy and how will they react. Also building your core army for grand campaign you will never get bored as there are many ways to win the game with different playstyle and different build.

AI, my experience is they react well to what force you bring to battle, they react very differently to my army combinations and choice. When you think you know the AI reaction they will suprise you and make you pay for it.

Gameplay, I agree with someone saying it's easy to learn but hard to master the game which is absolutely true, I have clock 1.5k hr on steam playing this and I still find it very fresh. Heroes combination and customizing your unit base on heroes makes it very effective in certain situation. When you think your army is strong that's the time you will learn they are not especially when you face russian later in grand campaign. There is no unit that is super unit or God mode as even the strongest die when you make mistake.

The developer still have a lot of expansion coming which I really appreciate it. Another game which is abit similar that covers pacific is OOB pacific. That's a good game to try also, while they have great mechanics however they fall short on scenario design. Scenario design is still better in Panzer Corps in my opinion.

Mods often require certain patch versions (ideally the most recent), but should not require you to buy a certain DLC.

But some mods that change really a lot of aspects of the game need to be run with the free Gerneric Mod Enabler (GME). In this case the creator usually provides info on that.

Caveat emptor: You can't transfer saved games or cores from iPad to PC or vice versa. These are two separate games; they must be purchased separately and played separately. That goes for all content: the base game, the DLCs, Afrika Corps, Allied Corps, and Soviet Corps.

You can of course simultaneously play one campaign on the PC and another on the iPad. Mods cannot be played on the iPad.

Playability is pretty much the same on PC and iPad. There are a few odd differences here and there--for example, V weapons can be refueled at airfields on the iPad, which makes it rather easier to win the war in the West--but as a general rule it is the same gaming experience.

Core units have gold trim, none core are silver trim.

As for replay value try grand campaign, afrika korps, allied corps, soviet corps normal panzer corps, sea lion grand campaign and new US grand campaign see if you remember the maps hehe, there so much thats official content, start adding in mods you got way to much to remember.

I suggest if your fan of panzer general try looking for mods of the originals, I know Nikividd done allied general, there one for panzer general too.

If you buy from slitherine you get the steam codes so you can play on both non steam and stean copy.

You find lots info in this forum about the game and 99% of people that use this forum nice polite and helpful.

As for slitherine there actually very helpful, and even now the games 5 years old still adding to it.

So buy it have fun, I sure your son will find it easy learn as the difficulty highly adjustable.

Word of warning there soft cap late in game, its designed to stop people buy ton tigers, elephants etc. I suggest read up about soft cap as can kick in really hurt if don't expect it. There another set rules that you can use that don't use soft cap and on the forum there way to cut soft cap out if you like new rules - the soft cap.

If you get stuck or need help just ask everyone try best help answer

Have fun playing

Hi all,

Many thanks for the helpful replies.

Unfortunately, having made the decision to purchase this game - I am currently stopped cold because the company that Slitherine is using to work with PayPal purchases refuses to accept my Paypay gift cards as a form of payment.

I have run into this problem before on some sights using US purchased gift cards, and have always gotten around it by switching to PayPal. Unfortunately, this time it isn't working and I am not about to link and active credit card to PayPal just to purchase a game.

Hopefully I will receive a response to my inquiries to Slitherine about how this may be respolved.

Thanks again.
