Ancient/Medieval History Books

Post by Patonius »

I buy most of my books on line now, where as 20 years ago used to go into the History Book store in the city every week to buy what was new. as a result, I probably miss a lot of the new good stuff being released....

Thought we could have a section that details good books on the topic above.... At least if we get names of books up, we can go to Amazon and read indepth reviews after being introduced to the books here...

1) In the Name of Rome by Adrian GOLDSWORTHY.....480 pages split into 16 chapters, each chapter talking about a Roman General, their exploits, and a famous battle or two that they are famous/infamous for. The book obviously summerizes (it's a large topic of course) but is an enjoyable narrative, easy to pick up and read in chapters. I have a couple of GOLDSWORTHY's books now, and generally enjoy his style of writing. 1st chapter starts with Fabius and Marcellus, the 2nd with my fav general Scipio Africanus. Caesar is lucky, he gets two chapters, one on Gaul and one on the Civil Wars. The final chapter is on Belisarius. For a general overview, and an enjoyable read, I would recommend it.
