Thracian with +4 initiative?

Post by spring »

Hi again all,

Today i'm toying with some thracian versions and was pondering the value of a +4 initiative for
a Thracian army.( ok this one is 801pts....)
It could give something like that:
IC 80pts
TC*2 70pts
TC (ally) 25pts
4 LH, Unprot, Undr, Jav, Light Spear*4= 112pts
6 LH, Unprot, Undr, Jav, Light Spear*1= 42pts
8 MF, Prot, Undr, HW *1 = 56pts
8 MF, Prot, Undr, Jav, Sw *3 = 144pts
8 MF, Prot, Undr, Off Spear* 4 = 224pts
6 LF, Unprot, Undr, Jav, Light Spear*1 = 24pts
6 LF, Unprot, Undr, Sling *1 = 24pts

Ok, first impression is that i don't have so many "shock" BG's for an undrilled, cheap BG's, army, reaching the minimum number of
cav to get a +4 means that i don't spend so many points on "stronger" troops.
As i've not played any "warbands" army in FoG i'm not sure what is the viable amount of inf to balance the relative weakness of
individual inf BG's.
What do you think guys? I still like the idea of the+4 for Thacian and the chance to get favorable terrain but not sure it's worth
spending so many points in cav just to get a +1 compared to a similar army spending more points in MF BG's with a +3.

Thracians focusing on MF would want Woodlands and lots of terrain scattered around. But you have a lot of open terrain troops, so what is your ideal battlefield going to look like and what is your tactical doctrine weaving together the different flavors of MF and all that horse? Go slow with the infantry while flank marching some mounted?

If you take an ally, I assume is it the Greeks who would have to bring at least some HF hoplites, serving in the open ground. At that point you have relatively little MF compared with open terrain troops.

I'm sure there are ways to make it work, but with MF a minority there is less need for terrain Initiative so maybe you will trim the mounted and take a +3 bonus.
