Early Dynastic Egypt

Post by Keef »

I'd like to try out "Old" Kingdom Egyptian under FoG. I don't think it'll be too controversial a list on the basis that it is simply a cut-down all-foot version of the New Kingdom beta-list . . . just adds a few more foot (in quantity) and removes all the chariots and "frilly" (= "useful" !) stuff.

Anyhows, I'd be keen to hear some feedback on the following.

Terrain as per New Kingdom (NKE) beta list, ie Developed and Agricultural only.

Generals and camp as per all armies, the rest of the list drawn heavily from the DBM list in terms of mix, numbers and types. The FoG type classifications are identical to the New Kingdom beta-list.

Archers as MF unprotected drilled average bow. BGs 6-8; 24-60.
'Close fighters' (etc) as MF protected drilled average light spear swordsmen. BGs 6-8; 6-60.
'Elite' light infantry as LF un/protected drilled average javelin/lght spear. BGs 4-8; 0-8.
Egyptian/Nubian light archers as LF unprotected un/drilled poor or average (or superior if nubian) bow. BGs 6-8; 6-18.
Arab/Libyan javelinmen as LF unprotected undrilled poor or average javelin/lght spear. BGs 6-8; 0-8.
Arab slingers as LF unprotected undrilled poor or average sling. BGs 4-6; 0-6.
Levy/'conscripts' as Mob unprotected undrilled poor. BGs 6-8/12; 6-40.

The rough guideline I used for numbers was to roughly double the maxima in the DBM lists; which seems to be what the NKE FoG beta-list seemed to do. Minima based on trying to maintain the 'feel' of the army. BG sizes are identical to the beta-NKE ones and where there were small DBM nos, I left these at a single BG (ish).

Whatdya reckon ??

Looks to be a reasonable representation. Alas you will have to wait till next year to find out exactly how close it is but there is nothing massively controversial in there.

A very good list but I can see some modifications after the WRG A&E book and other books are checked.

Maybe the Quiver carriers and javelinment/ 'Elite LF' can have a MF option as well.

The Close Fighteres rated as Swordsmen ? Because DBM has them fighting mainly with sideweapons of the kopesh style sword/ axe?

I have seen several references to Early Egyotians using a large two hand cutting weapon. Maybe add a troop type of heavy Weapon, Impact Foot?

Agree with Nubians being either Superior or Average. Libyan archers average or poor?
