Curious about combat

I watched this review where he was quite critical, but ultimately said "Simple but fun".

But his comment on combat was that most of it automated, and you spend a lot of time chasing ships around. I was wondering if anyone could provide some additional feedback about it, or even comment about aspects of the video.

I have not watch all the video (lack of time) but I do not watch tactical combat at this video. There are many other videos with it.

But what do you want know about the tactical combat?

He said that most combat was autoresolved and that a lot of his time was spent chasing ships across the star map.

I believe how he did not play too much. The autoresolve is a option, even there is a option for give you automatically the victory if the enemy can not win. If you play a mission where you have a powerful fleet against a enemy freighter without weapons, you will pursue the enemy but most of the times, it will make the jump to the lightspeed retreating from the battle there is a module for avoid it and you can put it at one from your ships. The other times where enemy does not retreat, you do not pursue it, it attacks you. Other times, probably you will retreat the battle or you will lose all your ships.
