Polaris Sector Fueling System.

Today we’re going to talk of how fuel affects gameplay in Polaris Sector: an army marches on its stomach, and ships are no different. Fuel will have an enormous impact on your strategy.

All ships carry a certain amount of fuel, determined by the Tanks which you’re carrying (allocated during the ship designing phase). Note that you can research more advanced types of Tanks to store fuel more efficiently.

The amount of fuel carried by a ship or a fleet will determine its Range. You will only be able to reach systems in range of your ships, and you risk reaching a point of no return if you don’t have enough fuel.

It’s generally a sound strategy to equip scout ships with more fuel, so they will be able to make longer travels in unknown space, and to have shorter supplies of fuels on invasion ships, to save on space. Beware, though! That means you might have a reduced range in your fighting force. This could be a problem if you have scattered colonies far away from your own home worlds, as your main fleet might be unable to reach them if they were attacked.

So how do you refuel your ships? The easiest way is to just have your ships stop by a system you own, and they will automatically resupply. That also implies that it’s usually a good idea to own systems in strategically important locations, to function as “refueling points”.

If you can’t afford that luxury, there’s a number of things you can do: equip freighters with refueling modules to constantly resupply your fleets while on the move, sign diplomatic agreements with alien races to allow your ships to refuel at their star systems, steal fuel from alien races' star systems (cloaked ships only), or you could equip your ships with Stellar Energy Converters to passively increase their fuel stocks whilst in star systems (very useful for long range scouts and fuel tankers).

I read the explanation above on how refueling ships are supposed to work, but in my latest playthrough, I cannot move a corvette with fuel capacity of 4000 tons to the next planet capable of fueling when accompanied by a freighter with refueling capability and 34000 tons of fuel on board. The distance to the planet says it requires 4260 tons of fuel. All other corvettes have 5000 ton capacity and of course they can make the jump. I checked, and yes, the freighters, aptly named ExxonValdez class, do have refueling modules on board and all state that they are capable of refueling other ships. Any suggestions?

I've just discovered a fuel-related bug. I've designed an extended range scout ship --- basically a modified version of the starting ship, only with a stellar converter in order to refuel from the stars they orbit. One of my scout ships just ran out of fuel --- in the territory of another empire. I needed 2880(ish) fuel in order to make it to the nearest star outside of the known territory of this other empire. While waiting/gathering fuel (I was up to just at 2800), a pair of empire fighters attacked my unarmed freighter. I hit retreat and successfully started of in my random direction....

....only to find out that my once empty fuel tanks were now fully fueled!

You can only refuel at target system, means even if you have a tanker ship, ALL your ships still need enough fuel for that one jump. They'll refuel upon arriving, not in flight.

You can stop at a star just inside of your borders (any star your main fleet has range to reach). Then select the fleet (I think you can do by fleet, but might have to select individual ships) and a refuel from tanker mission icon will show up in the top right selection group. Refuel, then move on outside of your borders. You can do this as often as your tanker has fuel to continue refueling.
