Just got back into figure painting after a long break and have bought some late roman figures (25mm)

wanted to know of some resources for getting the right colours and shield design around 357AD for heavy cavalry, light cavalry, legions, archers and auxilia to be played with using the field of glory rules

I have already bought late roman and cavalry by osprey but wanted a bit more infomation

WRG 'Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome'. Got all the known shield patterns by unit.

Not quite all, however, go here:

Note we don't know all of the units that fought with Julian and there are no shield patterns for any western cavalry in the Notitia.

My how I wish the internet was around when I was a boy. :( The WRG ones are black and white, tho I did think it showed all the known ones.

IIRC it has all the western ones, the eastern cavalry and a selection of the eastern infantry shields.

Ah, for cloths colours I would recommend that you get the Graham Sumner Ospreys on Roman Military Clothing - he summarises the evidence so you can make your mind up as to what you think is the best solution. There is, I'm afraid, no definite answer - although you can't really go wrong with red, white or a mix of both IMO.

I'm just finishing off my second batch of Late Roman Cataphracts as I type this and would agree with the above post. Who's going to despute you, anyone who was there is dead?

I've gone the wargamer traditional red for the Legion and various shades of off white for the Auxilia.
