I don't think ambushes hit the unsuspecting unit far enough.
This dinky light Japanese tank went smack into the 10-fortified defender.
The tanks suffered 1 strength lost, the defender 4...
Both units had zero experience.
Somebody must have whispered something in the tank commander's ear.

Edit: Tried a normal attack, 3 strength lost for the defender.

The recruits are pretty terrible units. I would have thought -1/-2 more appropriate though.
