Pacific Allies Campaign Let's Play

Post by ParadogsGamer »

Hi all

I have decided (a little late) to start a Let's Play on this great game.
I am starting off with the Pacific Allies Campaign with the Betio scenario as an add on and then continuing with the Imperial Japan campaign after that.
Hopefully I will be ready for the upcoming DLC which I will also LP when it arrives.

Link to the playlist which will be populated with a new video every day: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 2Oap2GRETH

Enjoy

Nice work :) You have a pretty good voice (and microphone) for this.

You might want to disable music and maybe ambients sounds though, cos it gets a bit overwhelming when mixed with a voice.

Thank you :-)

I will look into tweaking the sound a bit.

I hope to get into the beta for the DLC, but still waiting to hear from you ;-)

I'm really enjoying your let's play series and I have some feedback for you.

Bonus objectives

When you click on the bonus objectives, you will get information about the reward you'll get when you complete them. It would be nice if you could discuss this at the start of the mission and explain how do you take advantage of this reward.

Anti-aircraft gun

Some anti-aircraft guns can be switched to anti tank mode, these provide anti-tank escort fire which is usually much more helpful (in the Bataan scenario for example).

Heavy infantry

I believe heavy infantry are a completely useless unit in long term, because they are terrible for offensive operations. They suffer penalty when moving through terrain and their mobility is very limted. They need to be deployed with a transport which takes up 1 more supply making it 5 total. Compared to the marines (3) it's almost twice that much. Supply is problem in the mid campaign as well.

RP waste

You keep wasting precious RP in multiple ways. First never use "elite replacements" on inexperienced or auxiliary units. Next, it does matter how you reinforce a unit. The most cost effective way is to replace 5 points in a single replacement action, second most efficient is to replace 2 points by limited replacement action. So if you have unit at 4 points you should replace 5 points in one action rather then 6 points in 3 actions. You should never reinforce units at 9 points.

XP

Experienced units have very limited benefits compared to Panzer Korps, some people even argue if it's even worth using elite replacements at all. Obvsiously, it's more expensive so that's the downside. The upside is very limited combat benefit (almost not noticible) and also efficiency loss when unit is beat up is lowered. Ironically, this can be a bad thing, because an experienced unit can decide not to retreat and is destroyed as a result (inexperienced unit would have retreated and survived).

Ship landings

You kept targeting the infantry transports, but I believe in case of Bataan is a mistake. The supply ships should have been the main target. Without supply ships those landed marines would have done one attack and that's it. Also note that damaged supply ship provides less supply.

Looking forward to more of your videos :)

Hi Mojko. Thank you for following and for the feedback.

Good idea. I will do that.

I knew this, but find them more or less useless. I also believe they will be less useful when we get to the offensive operations.

I believe I was simply trying to max out the number of squads in relation to how many command points I had available. I do believe the Marines are very good and will be used more in the future.

This is something that I have not thought about at all. In fact I didn't know how this mechanic worked at all when I began playing.
How do you do a limited replacement action?
I only used elite reinforcements on the Filipino units because they had their own command points pool. Was this wrong?

I will indeed shift to more armored units for the offensive actions.

Well, they never got to land behind my lines. They only landed behind their own lines, in which case they are in full supply regardless of supply ships. But I will remember the supply ship tactic for later.

If a unit has not done any action and you select replacements it will trigger "full replacement" action restoring up to 5 points. If unit has moved or is next to an enemy unit it will trigger "limited replacement" action restoring up to 2 points.

The cost of these actions is different. For example if you have a unit at 8 points and if you trigger "full replacement" it will cost you more compared to "limited replacement" even though you get exactly the same number of points. This leads to strange situation where it is more efficient to move a unit and replace points, because it costs less RP. Sometimes this however is unwanted because for example you want the unit to rest and gain efficiency, thus you don't want to move. This will cost you extra RP, because "full replacement" is triggered.

I have already criticized the replacement system, because you don't have direct control on how many points you want to replace. Currently it's determined by the unit action during that turn. I personally would prefer the option to order exact number of points, also I would like to devalue RP to something like 1/1000. This would allow the RP costs be more precise and we could avoid rounding (small replacement costs suffer from rounding currently).

Using elite replacements on Filipino units is a waste because the amount of experience they have is very small.

Ahh thanx for the explanation.

About the Filipinos. They had plenty of points and I couldn't use those points for anything else. So I don't see the problem just using elite replacements with them.

In that case, you are right - it made no difference. Anyway, I was always struggling with RP, so I try to optimize their use to maximum :)

that goes with any auxiliary unit. The trick is not to lose them. For some reason, you don't seem to be able to replace them, unless I am missing something. Totally possible!

Well in case of the Bataan scenario, you don't get to take the Filipino units with you, while your own units do gain experience. So I would say that losing them is not a big deal as long as you lose them in a way that is helpful.
