Hmm... :?

I don't see any restriction so i'd assume yes, but its a full complex move to do so.

You can't pick them up if enemy are within 6MU, but there seems to be nothing stopping you deploying them (p121)

However, it can be argued that it is not one of the allowed actions in a Restricted Zone on page 74 ...

Good point, but right at the start on p74 it says;

'For normal movement only, a BG within 2MU directly in front of an enemy is considered to be pinned. It can only perform a limited number of actions:' (my emphasis)

So...is placing TFs considered 'normal movement'?

:? :?:

Yes you can put down stakes in the restricted area. (Otherwise you could not advance to long range before placing them, as was done at Agincourt, because the French could advance to Restricted Area range before you could place them.)

If this isn't clear, we may need to FAQ it.

I think that FAQ entry would be valuable since the wording on p 74 creates an exclusive list by referring to "a limited number of actions" with the third option being "Remain in place. (It can expand or turn, but not contract)."

This allows some specific complex moves while precluding others (including forming Orb, in the paragraphs following Portable Defences), so specificity would help.
