Game Won't Start Up

Post by Cdubs33 »

Cheers.

I recently updated to v1.6.4 (last week) and then opened the game with no issue. I opened up the 1915 scenario to see what changes were in the game, then closed it out and went on vacation for the weekend. I came back from vacation and went to launch the game, and it wouldnt start. As soon as I click "Play" the black launch screen comes up and then immediately crashes to an error popup of "ctgw.exe has stopped working". No changes were made between the time I was on vacation (and it worked) to the issue I have now. I went through the Readme First file and went line by line making sure my graphics driver(s) were updated, tried launching the "ctgw_d3d" (same issue as .exe launch), uninstalled 1.6.4 then reinstalled the prior version (same issue) and reinstalled 1.6.4 and still the same issue. I have included the .zip file containing both my ctgw log and DxDiag file.

Not sure this helps at all but if I click to play the game with the intro video it will run the intro and then once it is supposed to launch the game screen it stops working with the "ctgw.exe has stopped working" error.

*Full disclosure: I am a history buff, not a computer-literate individual so if I missed something clear I apologize in advance.

Please rename the folder Commander The Great War as _Commander The Great War in the Windows documents folder at:
...\Documents\My Games

Start theg ame and check if the issue persists.

Made the change and am now getting a "Bink Error" followed by "ctgw.exe has stopped working" .

I have the same serial number from when I originally bought the download from Slitherine last year.

New line in log file right after Renderer is as follows:

Log date: 2015-09-14 15:39:09
[15:39:10][8984]Unable to read game settings. Using defaults.

Disable the video Intro:
Click the Change Configuration button on the desktop launcher menu and tick off Play Intro and click on the "Play" button.
Do you receive the same error message?

Hmm, attempted to click on Change Configuration and received "Windows cannot find '\ctgw_launcher.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly then try again."

Launcher file in Documents->My Games says following:
FIRST FALSE
REZ 4
REZ_X 1366
REZ_Y 768
REZ_BPP 32
Fullscreen TRUE
VSync TRUE
Intro FALSE

More information, I have this game sitting in Program Files (x86), should it be moved to Program Files?

Thank you for the assistance.

It seems that the game is not properly installed.
Have you reinstall the game using the original downloaded file? Or are you trying to install with the update file?

The last reinstall I performed was with v1.6.4, not the original.

That's just an update, it won't have all the files.
You need always to install using the original downloaded game file installer and then update with the last patch/update.
If you don't have a back up of the original game file installer you need to email support[at]slitherine.co.uk and ask for a new download link.
