How to beat the Keil?
I'm stuck on the VERY first scenario because I am a noob. My problem, basically, is that I don't have a counter to the keil (here, "Royal Swiss"). In the scenario, you are provided with "Early Pike & Shot," which are an *extremely* poor match-up against the Swiss. Your main asset in the scenario are your Reiters and Gendarmes, both of which are next to useless against the Keil. You might think that you could wear the keils down with a LOT of mounted arquebusiers, but you have at most 3 against two of the Royal Swiss keils. So, how do you beat them?

Re: How to beat the Keil?
It's listed in the description of each Keil unit that it's immune to penalties from attacks to the sides or rear.

If you re-read the description, you will see that it is immune to penalties from flank attacks, but not rear attacks. (Compare the description of Early Tercios, which are immune to both).colonel_panic wrote:It's listed in the description of each Keil unit that it's immune to penalties from attacks to the sides or rear.
See also the manual, section 9.4.5
To count as a rear attack the charger has to start its move less than 45 degrees from directly behind the keil. There are some slight differences between the way the engine reports relative angles depending on the orientation of the target unit, so the safest bet is to be directly behind the target keil.

If that is the case then it is an Early Tercio type of Kiel. Only they are immune to the penalties from rear attacks.colonel_panic wrote:It's listed in the description of each Keil unit that it's immune to penalties from attacks to the sides or rear.
I find that lots of arquebusiers can wear down enemy Kiels until they are disrupted. At that point they can be charged by your foot or heavy lancers.

Whoops, I'll check that out.rbodleyscott wrote:If you re-read the description, you will see that it is immune to penalties from flank attacks, but not rear attacks. (Compare the description of Early Tercios, which are immune to both).
The first listed under "Historical Scenarios"-- I can't find the name right now, but the player is French Huguenot fighting French Catholics. All your troops start out turned 90 degrees to the left.Warlord wrote:Which scenario are you playing?
EDIT: battle of Dreux.
