Which Rommel version is the easiest?

Post by Ursulet »

Hi there,

I'm a new joiner on both the forum and the game even though I bought the game and dlc back in 2012. Then i no longer had time to play due to many reasons

I resumed the game 2 months ago, went through dlc 39 to 43 on colonel, general and FM. (I learnt a lot from the brillant videos deducter posted).

Now i feel ready for Rommel, i've played 39 till piatek, all with DV so far, XP is growing fast but prestige is clearly an issue. I've to learn to save prestige, so i mostly do green renforcement but i still am very low on prestige.

So i am wondering how it's gonna get later on. Rommel is challenging! May be too much!

So now comes the question. I have not updated the game since 1.04 or 1.05. Should i? How would it change the difficulty of the game on Rommel?

I've read here that on one hand you get some Nice heroes and units but on the other hand there is the soft cap, even though i fail to see how it impacts the rommel level. So i'm a bit confused here. Would it make it easier to upgrade?

Thanks for your help,

Regards

Yes you should update the game imho. There was some bug fixes and some nice changes like the advanced options where you can fine tune your difficulty level. The new 1.20 rules will make the game a bit harder but imho as well more fun but if you don't like them you can always swap back to the old 1.14 rules in the advanced options. Prestige Softcap is part of the 1.20 rules so if you play by the 1.14 rules you won't be affected by it anyway. If you prefer the 1.20 rules without prestige softcap you can edit a config file manually and have it that way too.

The special heroes added to GC are making it slightly easier but except a few who are really strong they don't make much difference really but are a nice flavour.

The softcap will affect you on Rommel reducing your prestige even further so if you struggle with prestige already in 39 you should rather stay clear of Rommel. In the GC you should be amassing prestige in the early years so you can use the cushion to survive the later years. 43 starts to be slowly painful but 44 and 45 will hit you like sledgehammer. If you want a challenge feel free to try it but it may end with you being unable to progress. But don't worry it's nothing to be ashamed to not be able to beat the game on Rommel. I am personally already struggling with Field Marshal and usually if i want a chilled fun game i just stick to General. This is the beauty of the different difficulty levels: everyone can chose the one that fits him.

I said prestige is an issue in 39 because i'm still managing it like if i was playing on FM! I bought 1 stuka, 2 lvl bombers, 3 inf, 3 art, 1 Pz 38 and 1 flak 88and didnt disband anything...that doesnt come cheap!

I've started playing it on my second computer with the upgraded version and this is much easier. More prestige to start with, 800 vs 500, less troops in poznan so that was way easier, and then you get oleh dir for free and it fixed my pionner with truck issue i couldnt afford on the other version.

How wrong i was! There is clearly a change on the AI behaviour with the upgrade. The AI is more agressive and the sequence is different( reconnaissance then arty then fighters and tanks and infantry). , much more efficient. It has forced the surrender of a couple of my units already.
