Submarine spotting in submerged mode ?

Post by rad »

Can anyone explain the parameters for submerged submarine spotting ? The hex scale of OOB Pacific looks to be 1 mile per hex - my Allied side submarines in submerged mode have been spotted / attacked up to 10 hex range distance (without other enemy units closer than Jap side attack unit) e.g. in the Tokyo Invasion scenario the static coastal gun guarding the entrance to Tokyo harbour ? This minor question aside - OOB Pacific takes the wargame genre to the next level ...

Did you per chance use the max. movement of your sub before? You'll notice that it stays submerged only to some extent, but changes to surfaced when you want to go faster.

Yes that must be the reason - there's no reference to this outcome in the Manual under the entries for submarines I can find but it makes sense now - thanks !

Just noticed this post. My subs keep getting attacked in deep ocean and I thought the AI was just cheating. So If I move the max number of hexes this is why they are spotted? If I move one hex less than the max they will remain un-spotted unless detected by sonar? This should be in the manual.

Cheers,
Chris

Note how there is a special icon on the furthest move overlays. It displays a submarine icon ABOVE a waterline. This means to reach these hexes the submarine must surface to travel at maximum speed. If instead you use the normal moves the sub will remain submerged and invisible to the enemy.

Not often I get to correct the head beagle :D
