Guadalcanal (Japan)

Post by Dragoon. »

Ran into three minor quirks while playing the scenario.

The news flash when you have linked up all pockets of resistance have don't have a picture.

After killing the Last Marine Raider the objective was still open (no checkmark), but I got the reward nonetheless.

During the battle I got a news flash about discovered jungle trails behind the enemy lines. I guess a tunnel of some sort? Anyway I didn't see anything on the map, or hinted too. If the news flash windows zoom on the location, then maybe I accidentally edge scrolled away.

Encounter the first two problem too and I got that hero too and the third point on the trail, it's not a tunnel but a road leading from the second pocket(bunker) to East side and turn North to a town and the mountain that need help.

Note: using that trail can effectively cut off the town and link up with third pocket and the mountain but beware of some enemy there. It's tough enuf to crack my elite marine lol

Oh that explains why it had no relevance in my case. I walked the AT gun from the last resistance pocket to the bunker to link those two together. So when I got the message it was already obsolete. You can actually see the 1 hex wide trail on the first picture in the lower right corner. :)

Edit: Lol that could explain something strange I wondered about. I noticed the AT guys could walk 2 jungle hexes at once. Maybe it walked the hidden road event it was not visible?

If you actually use the trail and approach the town from the rear you get a neat bonus -- and the combat there becomes MUCH easier. I just tried it over the weekend headon and had no progress.

What was the bonus you got for approaching the last town?

Except for a two marines, the auxiliary paratroopers later, I completely ignored the south. All those allied troops later where easy pickings, as I cut their supply lines by my rapid advance. Similar to Java. Ignored the south, steamrolled the north.
I found the mission very easy because you can concentrate all firepower on the coast. Bombard everything you encounter into submission, and the just steamroll. My core of 4 artillery guns, 3 Yamatos, 1 cruiser, 2 DD and the auxiliary ships where overwhelming.

Did you saw the first picture I posted at turn 25? Those allied tanks where basically the last organized resistance, on the map. But next turn after 3 artillery guns, 5 destroyers and rest of the fleet opened fired, they were literally either red or dead.
I made sure to not kill the bunker and the heavy infantry though. So once my infantry crossed the river, they could take advantage of the bonus move for pushing back the enemy, and clear the river that immediately.

I'll let the bonus be a surprise, then (to avoid spoilers)! Your tactics are wise, though -- trying to slog through the backcountry is pretty futile, because your own supply is weak and without roads units are limited at times to one hex per turn. Ditto Java -- attacking in the south will get you bogged down and negate your superior naval fire. I noticed an anomaly in scripting there -- I managed to rush in and seize a bridge before the Dutch blew it, and then, while my unit was on it it apparently was blown! No damage to my unit, though ..

The northern approach is safer under the protection of your fleet but the southern approach gives you some goodies and won't specify either ( like boarspear said to avoid spoiler ).

I am too use to killing every enemy unit since the time I play PzC so my habit of search and destroy makes it fun for me to use the south area.

I only remember getting a heavy infantry. I don't think where was anymore special. Hmm... I turned to the south after I surrounded Henderson Airfield. Was a clean up, as the UStroops had no supply base anymore. For some reason a Stuart tank wandered into the very bottom right corner and stayed there, after it attacked the last village only once.
