Ship & Unit Names & First Impressions

Post by Ballacraine »

Hi,

I'm really liking this new release.

Others have already mentioned minor gripes about place names & undo buttons.

Personally, whilst I really like the animations & sound files, it is giving my mid range computer a hard time.

It sets the fans buzzing hard.
Could optimisation be improved?

Ship & unit names could do with some love.
Would it be possible to give the ships their historic names?
I think it is a significant omission in a game named Order of Battle. ;)
As regards the land units, just having the default unit name with a number would be a marginal improvement in itself.

I have got as far as the Solomon scenario.
I think it is a bit OOT to end the campaign because of the loss of one flattop.

Loving the game to bits anyway.

I'm looking forward to seeing it mature & develop further.

You can rename units.

I realise that, but without a Jane's book to hand I can't remember the historic ship names per class.

For US ship names, try The Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet. Years ago I purchased four editions in a boxed set from the United States Naval Institute's publishing branch.

Versions in the box:

1939
Two Ocean Fleet
War
Victory

Gives a good insight into how the pre-war buildup was handled and just how much economic power the US brought to bear at the time.

Thanks.

Whilst I do love the old reference books, I do think it would be a good idea for the developers to put the historic ship names in though.

We named (enemy) ships for the Java Sea scenario but didn't apply it to other scenarios IIRC. Not really a conscious decision behind that, just higher priorities I guess :)

That being said, some beta testers did get confused by all the custom ship names, as one might think they're all different unit types/ship classes.

Yes I can see that.

The default class naming is fine as the generic description, but historic individual ship names would add to the immersion.

Whilst on the subject of ships though.

Shouldn't Destroyers have an AA capability & Cruisers a torpedo ability?

I saw in other threads asking for torpedo damage increase.

Also there should be duds & misses. ;)

I would like to see a ship's class & proper name, e.d.: DD Johnston (Fletcher), but that's probably too much to ask.

DD's had limited "offensive" AA capability compared to the CA's, CL's and BB's so a self-defense only for them is probably accurate. I have yet to run into a CLAA but my hope is high for their stats. :)

Cruisers often had torpedoes but it was the DD's that carried out most surface attacks. BB's also had float planes but in the game they are limited to CA's. If there is to be differentiation between combat units, then some leeway has to be made for game balance purposes. I get that such (unhistorical) unit specialization is part of the PG/PC game paradigm of rock/paper/scissors type combat. This is still a beer and pretzels game, albeit with craft beer and hot mustard on the pretzels.

That seems like a fair synopsis.

Yes and no I guess - assuming this topic hasnt been discussed elsewhere in full depth... (?).
Invading Narvik I am supported by the "9th"and "10th Heavy Cruiser" which could have been named "Scharnhorst" and "Gneisenau" (depending if one would class them as battleship or cruiser...)
Or Admiral Hipper...
Losing them there means they should not reappear elsewhere in the game...

Narvik? Are you talking about a different game?

I think the idea in OOB-P is that the default ship name is the class and you can rename it.
I've renamed every ship in my custom naval scenarios.

You can rename every ship because u know the names but for the majority of players it is impossible.
I think it is an mistake to just have the classe ship because many players would like to see the real name and when they notice that they don't know the ship, they have curiosity to see on google what this ship has done in ww2, it forces players to search more info and it make game more immersive.

ps: sorry for my bad english, i m not english

I kind of agree. It would be nice if the official scenarios had units with the proper names, this goes for all kinds of units.
But if you purchase a unit in the game, you need to assign the name yourself.
At least ship names should be easy to find on Wikipedia.

When this game was first released someone posted a file with the names of ships in WWII. So if you can find that file you will be able to name your ships without much hassle.

I downloaded it at the time. I will look for it and post it unless someone beats me to it.

It isn't the best solution but it will work.
