2nd time playing through Grand Campaign FM level

Post by goose_2 »

Hello,

I am starting a new thread detailing some of what is going on in my 2nd attempt to play the Grand Campaign on this remarkably in depth game.

(If you are interested in hearing about my first blind playthrough that I am still attempting go to the general forum and click on the Multiple Heroes 1 unit Thread.)

I am trying a 2nd attempt at this playthrough without replaying battles, saving often, or redoing anything just accepting whatever happens as part of the challenge of the game.
I have blown through the first 3 battles and am now set to start Piatek.
I have not lost a single unit and most of my units have almost 1 star of experience. (Any that have 1 star I have overstrengthened to 11)
I have about 2000 prestige and these are the units that I am starting Piatek with.
6 infantry (includes 1 Pioneer, 2 Inf, 3 Gerbisjager) 1 inf is se I sold the other se inf hoping for a tank se
3 tanks (includes 2 PZ1a, and 1 PZ38t)
1 recon
5 artillery
2 (AA88's)
2 fighters
3 Bombers (1 recon Rudel)

I am able to deploy 16 units plus my 1 se inf.
This is what I was thinking of deploying for this next battle based on me needing to defend against a sizeable Polish force that crushed me on my 1st blind playthrough.
6 inf
1 PZ38t tank
4 artillery
2 aa which do well in their antitank roll as well.
2 fighters
2 bombers (no Rudel)

What do you think of that strategy?
Would you purchase certain units in preperation for this defensive battle? If so what?
Which is better to try and defend over the river or get them to take your victory hexes and kick them out?
My 1st time through I went on the attack and was smacked down pretty hard. (I want to avoid that.)
I am not afraid of going on the attack, I just think I will make sure to destroy their first wave first before I try to jump the gun.

I appreciate you sharing your wisdom with me without spoiling some of the blind nature to which I am trying to play this 2nd go around.

I will take any advice you can give me and try to apply it when I play this weekend.

Well, early in the game I tend to like running around with a couple Recon units. Their special move allows me to take extra prestige then move out of danger.
Otherwise, what you have is about what I use. :)

Ok the scenario is done and the verdict is in. Total Victory with total destruction of all Polish units and all flags under my control. Total losses on my side 1 auxiliary recon and 2 auxiliary anti tank guns. 0 Core units lost.

Here is the details on how it went down.
I took the advice and brought my single recon unit which turned out to be great advice because I utilized it to maximize my prestige earnings while minimizing losses.
I also brought all 6 of my infantry.
1 Pz 38ta
4 artillery
1 aa unit
2 fighters
2 bombers (no Rudel)
1 week in I held on to all the victory objectives. I had huge pressure being applied to Ozorkow and I had lost one auxiliary recon on first turn and 1 auxiliary anti tank gun.
I almost lost my core recon and needed to pull back to regroup and replace. My tactic of primarily staying on the defensive and taking out units only when I can minimize losses is really paying off. 2431 prestige at this point.
2weeks in and 1 week to go.
I went on the attack and as such left myself vulnerable to their Northern flanking maneuver. However, my attack was a complete success. I have taken over all the cities and am applying serious pressure on Kutno. General Kutrzeba has abandoned Kutno and is trying to move South. I will take over Kutno and the last 2 remaining objectives seized by Poland on my Eastern flank. Casualties on my core force have been limited. Prestige at 2950
During Turn 17 lost additional auxiliary anti tank gun. They keep putting out 7tp big dog Polish tanks. Starting to become unsure I can pull off Decisive victory with 3 turns remaining.
Turn 18 Ju87b Bomber first to earn medal Iron Cross 2nd Class.
By last turn took out all enemy units including anti aircraft guns and all Polish Generals and own all flag areas. Going into next scenario with 3053 prestige after replacing all units and overstrengthening to at least 11 for all that apply.
I am thinking about purchasing mostly new army to start earning some experience on green troops while I can.
I am at least going to purchase
1 Pz38ta
2 new fighters
3 new artillery
2 new bombers
2 new infantry
and anything else you may suggest before I go into new battle.
Thanks for the interest and suggestions on this thread.

I am busting through all of Campaign '39 with all decisive victory's and building up some seriously experienced units. I am much better off than the first time I played and am pleased with my progress.
Instead of taking you through the ins and outs of every battle as they were not very exciting.
I will simply say I am starting Narvik and when I get that complete I will give a low down of my army going into Campaign '40 after I finish.
Most of my units do not have heroes as I transition them out before they can get enough kills to get a hero.
I have 2 exceptions.
SE Gerbisjager unit +1 Defense
2nd Pioniere unit +1 Initiative
Not the greatest heroes, but seeing as I do not replay or reload, I take what I can get.
I have almost completely stopped buying Elite Replacements as it is pointless if you play the game right and is not needed because of the soft cap.
I should have started out that way but I still like walking into scenarios with my units at 11 because it feels more BA.
I have not lost a single core unit and have the captured Polish artillery, of course.
I will give a final prestige count and unit roster after finishing Narvik, hopefully this weekend.
Blessings on your endeavors...and please shoot me a line if you would like to challenge me in the multiplayer section as that is the true joy of this amazing game.

Would you like to hear a day to day log like I am doing in my Multiple Hero thread. It is time consuming, but if there is interest I am willing to lay it out because I am so enjoying this game.

Please reply on this thread or send me a private message so I know if doing a day to day strategy for Sedan and going forward would interest anyone.
Thanks!

 I like reading peoples' AARs so it is disappointing when they get cut short. I really wanted to see how you would go in '44
