Large infanry units forming square

Yo all!

Quick question - if a large infantry unit, that has formed up 2 bases wide and three deep (as opposed to three bases wide and two deep) forms square to repel a cavalry attack, does it fight as a large square or a small square since it would shoot as a small unit - being only two bases wide? Assume the cavalry will be hitting the two-base wide 'side' of the square - initially the front of the formation.

Or, for squares, configuration is unimportant and the unit will fight as a large one.

For information, we decided the square always fights as a large unit, irrespective of the formation it started off in.

As far as I know large units in square is never mentioned in the rules so I always treat it as a large unit for combat. It's easier to determine when in tactical or extended line, but square is square.

I believe the rules state a unit fights at its size. No issue of orientation. So large square is large.

Yes but a large unit, 3 rank deep would fight as a small unit with rear support .

Large units in square always fight as large units. Otherwise, you'd be fiddling with whether the enemy is on contact with a two base end or a 3 base side.
