Some notes about the uniform

It is 1965 and the US ground war in Vietnam is in full swing. As a US Army commander, wage a counter-insurgency (COIN) war to secure the Ia Drang valley, on the border with Cambodia.

Some notes about the uniform

Post by PicnicJohn_slith »

Really enjoying this game! :D

As I got started I noticed a few uniform inaccuracies and I've attached a picture comparing the existing game uniform to a photo of an actual Class A uniform. Most are simply cosmetic and don't seem like they would affect game play as far as I can tell, given my progression so far. There are some exceptions, though: officers do not wear marksmanship proficiency badges, and the official Air Assault proficiency badge was not created until after the war in 1974. (There were informal Air Assault badges that did not look like the official issue.) I have no idea what the impact would be on game play if these were changed.

There are a couple of great references on the subject by Shelby L. Stanton and published by Stackpole Books: Vietnam Order of Battle and U.S. Army Uniforms of the Vietnam War. He notes all sorts of informal/in-country badges and insignia that were unique to Vietnam. He wrote quite a few other relevant titles (a great WW2 Order of Battle), so his page on Amazon is worth a look.

Thanks again for a super game! My productivity levels have fallen to all new lows as a result...

Appreciate the feedback, I did try get as close as I could but still using a little bit of poetic license. Quite difficult to code the military protocols like with medal hierarchy etc

Will have a look.... :)

Thanks! I think you did a great job; these are just a couple of sniglets. It's hard enough keeping it sorted out, much less code it!

I'm really enjoying the game. It's easy to pick up, and it's possible to win right away; the challenge seems to be figuring out why and developing a strategy to win consistently. (Something I haven't managed just yet...)

Kudos on a great game!
