Engineer use

I'm a little confused on how to use the infantry engineers. I gather they are effective with breaking down defenses, but what is a good way to use them. I seem to get them half demolished by the time I reach the defensive position on the enemy I wish to destroy. Again, thanks for the help.

I find them best used to destroy enemy armor by assaulting them
Their main difference is they have a higher assualt chance compared to regular infantry

Infantry out in the open are extremely vulnerable, even elite troops. Either keep them in cover, or ideally suppress enemy units before advancing.
