Looking at the unit, terrain, and movement tables it seems to me that there is a disconnect somewhere. Most likely in my head.
It regards River Boats. The manual states that they can navigate rivers. The movement table states that they cannot. Only sea, shallow sea, strait and lake hexes are available. Not even major rivers.
Why call them river boats?
Why does placing a strait tile place an open ground tile? Do I have to overlay anywhere I want a river boat to go?
I can see how I can work around this. Place straits, then overlay with rivers.
The only issue I have with that process, other than the time-consuming nature, is that it allows ground units access to the strait hexes. According to the table, by using all its movement for a turn, a ground unit may enter a strait hex.
I was looking for river boats to move along major river hexes that were not available to either ground units or true naval units.
What am I missing? If I put straits in, then a destroyer could sail upstream at double movement costs. I have light cruisers in this scenario, and that is a bit much to have sailing a 100 Km up a river(not saying it wouldn't be neat, or that I cannot do it lol).
Must I dive into equipment files, or is there something else, or am I dealing with an engine limitation?
Do I use lake hexes and overlay?
Any relevant links or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your attention,
AG
