Troops which can/can't pass through LF

Post by WhiteKnight »

P 48...Cav, LH, LCh, Ele may pass thru LF in any direction.

NOT Kn HCh or Cat? Why not? Each BG is not necessarily meant to represent a continuous line of horsemen and if other mtd may pass through in their squadrons they could, too? Some ancient cavalry formed up just as closely as catapracts and knights, surely?

I don't believe those allowed to pass through LF may charge enemy in the impact phase if they can't see them. What if they CAN see the enemy they wish to charge due to overlapping the LF in front of them?

As far as I remember Hch, Kn and Cat can still basically charge through LF to hit an opponent but the burst through LF will become disrupted. Which seems reasonable, if a regiment of cataphracts or knights went by I suspect I would be pretty disrupted even if light foot. Actually I would be quite chuffed to still have all my limbs....

Yes, any shock troops must burst through LF if enemy are in charge range and they fail the CMT but only Kn, Cat and HCh or foot will disrupt them. I think those allowed to interpenetrate LF in the normal course of events must charge through, too, if shock troops, but will not disrupt the LF. Good for, say, Goths or Normans, less so for later shock mtd like Knights?

Also, still not sure if those shock horse can voluntarily declare a charge on troops they can see but there are LF partly in the path? Can they interpenetrate those LF in a voluntary charge, whether or not they disrupt them?

Under:
'General movement rules'
'Moving through friendly Troops'
'Interpenetrations'

"No interpenetrations are permitted when charging."
