Newby - Late republican roman army

Post by fredmanson »

Hello guys,

I just start to model my army of Late republican roman army.
I need a "base" which can be modified to the Triumph and Fall of Rome companion books.

I found a "starter army" list and I need some advices from the gurus of FOG!

The "starter army" list is composed of:
Commander-in-Chief--Field Comander (50 pts)
Sub-Commanders--2xTroop Comanders (70 pts)
Legionaires--5BGs (6 stands each) Superior/Armored/Drilled (420 pts)
Legionaires--1BG (4 stands) Superior/Armored/Drilled (56 pts)
Heavy Cavalry--1BG (4 stands) Superior/Armored/Undrilled (64 pts)
Light Cavalry--2BGs (4 stands each) Protected/Average/Undrilled (56 pts)
Archers--2BGs (6 stands each) Unprotected/Average/Undrilled (60 pts)
Fortified Camp-1 (24 pts)
TOTAL : 860 pts

This is what I propose for my army list:
1 Field Commander (50 pts) aka Marius Cesar
2 Troop Commander (70 pts)
16 germans heavy cavalry (Cv/Protected/Superior/Undrilled) 1 BG - 5 bases (80 pts)
96 legionnaries (HF/Armoured/Superior/Drilled) 4 BGs - 6 bases (336 pts)
32 legionnaries (HF/Armoured/Elite/Drilled) 2 BGs - 4 bases (136 pts)
8 cretan archers (LF/Unprotected/Superior/Drilled/Bow) 1 BG - 4 bases (24 pts)
12 slingers (LF/Unprotected/Average/Undrilled/Sling) 1 BG - 6 bases (24 pts)
1 Fortified Camp (24 pts)

15 german warriors (MF/Protected/Average/Undrilled) 1 BG - 5 bases (35 pts)

TOTAL : 777 pts

What do you think ? This army is a kit sold by a french manufacturer.

Thank you for your advices !!

Hi there!

I think the amount of legionaries looks good but I wonder if it's worth upgrading some to elite? Superior legionaries in 4s, 6s and 8s seem to do just fine!

I think your cavalry will be armoured for 64 pts, and superior so they will be good rear support for some legionaries even though you are short of cavalry overall.

The light foot seem just right, too.

In the published list in Rise of Rome there is no place for your German warriors, though, but you could consider fielding them as gladiators! They could be MF protected superior undrilled skiled swordsmen!

Best wishes, Martin

In terms of legionaries this list has plenty, 12 slingers is fine too.

I would look to get 6 bases rather than 4 of cretans.

The German warriors are rather odd, the FoG late republican list allows all sorts of medium foot but not Germans. I am also a bit confused by 16 heavy cavalry being 4 bases, they are based 3 to a base so 16 figures would be 5 and a bit bases.

Overall it looks a reasonably balanced force and worth playing but I would see if there is an alternative to the German warriors or at least look what they could be used as other than Germans.

Thanks for your advices !

So the base is good. Some cretan archers more and it will be OK!

For the germans warriors, maybe they can be:
javelinmen LF/Unprotected/Average/Undrilled.
What do you think?

I give them for the first time a better role because there is a german cavalry, as it is marked in the starter army companion book. And it's true, they are not in the Allies troops...

I've edited and corrected the first post, based on your remarks.

The Germans might be OK as light foot, it does rather depend on the figures. To be honest there aren't many of them so they are not a big problem.

I would expect most late republican armies to have one or two BGs of medium foot, either Thracian, Spanish, Illyrian or the Thureophoroi
