1 Army, Multiple Periods

Post by Mascius »

Looking at the many books that are scheduled to be released....

Are there armies that have a chance of being playable/cross-over in multiple periods? Or at least close enough to be a reasonable proxy in multiple books.

ie. This army of light horse and cataphracts can count as X army in Storm of Arrows but also as Y army in Legions Triumphant and Z army in Decline and Fall.

It rather depends on how far out you are willing to proxy.

There are a lot of armies that could be used for two books. One that springs to mind as fairly flexible would be Macedonian and successors which will gie you several armies from Immortal Fire and Rise of Rome.

Steppe light horse armies are notorious for high degrees of morphing, you could get away with the same figures for Huns all the way through to Mongols although the bowcase police would probably be out to get you.

Generic medievals are good for Storm of Arrows and some of the armies in the Ottoman book.

And historically people have taken immense liberties with anything Chinese

etc.

As well as the Hellenistic period being my favourite it also gives the opportunity to field several armies using the same figures as hammy has pointed out. I dislike painting and am rather slow (as I try to make a really good job of it) so to have the option of several armies is compensation for the grind of gradually building up a collection of painted figures.

The benefit of Hellenistic armies of the Macedonian-type is that there really were common troop-types and there should really be no need to pretend that the figures used are something else.

A Mongol army can be used in the following themes: (Later Far Eastern) [Mongol Conquest or Yuan Chinese], "Swords and Scimitars" (Crusades) [Ilkhanid Mongol] or

Arab/Berber troops can be used in the following themes: "Decline and Fall" (Byzantium and Islam) [Lots of different armies], (Dark Age Europe) [Andalusians], "Swords and Scimitars" (Crusades) [Fatimids], (Feudal Europe) [North African Berber States, Andalusian Taifa Kingdoms & Early Granadine], "Storm of Arrows" (Late Medieval Western Europe) [Later Granadine]. The mix of troops will vary and light horse will be javelin armed in North West Africa and Spain, lance armed (if Arab) elsewhere - but many of the troops will be correct for several themes.

Islamic horse archer armies can be used in the following themes: "Decline and Fall" (Byzantium and Islam) [Several different armies], "Swords and Scimitars" (Crusades) [Lots of different armies], "Eternal Empire (Rise of the Ottomans) [Several different armies].

If you are not too picky, cataphracts and light horse archers can be used in the following themes: "Immortal Fire" (Greeks, Persians and Macedonian) [Saka], "Rise of Rome" (Republican Rome) [Parthian], "Legions Triumphant" (Imperial Rome) [Kushan or Indo-Skythian, Palmyran], (Far Eastern) [Southern Hsiung-Nu]

In addition to full armis being availble for several books, Allied Armies such as the Arabs can be used with Christian Nubia in the book that will contain them and the Crusadesbook as well.

Also Arabs may be Allies for other armies as well.

The same can be expected for Medieval Spanish as some of their armies can be Allies for Meso-American Indian tribes.

I am sure that other examples will appear asa the list books are finalized and released.

A Celt army would be usable over a very long period. A Gaulish army could fight Republican Romans, Germans, Ilyrians, Spanish. To change it to a Britons army and fight early imperial Romans you just need to add some light chariots and slingers. Add Spanish and Carthaginians to build Hannibal's army. I believe the Galatians where also Celt so that opens up the chance to play against eastern armies.
