mounted crossbows
Hi, can anyone tell me how good or bad mounted crossbows in these rules, and how good or bad heavy artillery is, I know that the range is not to great, but are they worth the points. thinking of two heavy guns for late german army.
thanks, michael

Re: mounted crossbows
Mounted crossbows are OK, better against some opponents (like knights) than mounted bow. The cavalry crossbow swordsmen are really pretty good and if you can have armoured ones they are a very solid troop type indeed.terry1956 wrote:Hi, can anyone tell me how good or bad mounted crossbows in these rules, and how good or bad heavy artillery is, I know that the range is not to great, but are they worth the points. thinking of two heavy guns for late german army.

Heavy artillery are only so so in an open battle. The problem is that they are immobile.

I found Heavy artillery to be pretty useless. Not enough range to reach the enemy deployment area and they are unlikely to wander into its limited range & LOS.
As I understand as immobile guns that they cannot even pivot to change their arc of fire.

Clear the battlefield and let me see

Cavalry armoured x-bow sword, out of period will ride down any light horse, and should beat any cavalry that is protected, or un-protected, or doesn't have sword - this covers most missile armed cavalry.korvus wrote:Hey Steve,
I've been looking at mounted X-Bow cavalry as pretty useful in a theme setting where you can be sure to be facing knights or heavily armoured foot, in a wide open tourney setting I'm less convinced of their usefulness.
Have fun!

I really rate those armoured mtd xbow with sw capability! Was at the receiving end of a combined attack of a battle line of these with knights against my knights and came badly unstuck! Dont recall if the german ones are drilled or not but if they are, "expensive" but excellent, IMO.
Heavy art is relatively "cheap" but all it can do is (maybe) channel enemy away from a part of the playing area. Although the light art sacrifices range, its cheaper and can move a bit...with luck! In beta testing days, French army with 2x2 BG of Light Art led by a general and with rear support was a real pain!
On the whole, though, whilst the mtd crossbow can, I think, help swing a battle, artillery is far less likely to do so!

My Swiss love the mouted crossbow.
The 2 games I played they were able to annoy the eemy cavalry while slowly drawing thme closer to the pike forcing the test to keep the nut jobs from charging my pike.
One time the Connoterii spent so much time aranging a evil and diabolical plan to kill my 4 stand unit of Lorraniers and 4 stand unit of crossbow they failedd to notice I wiped out there other flank and tore there center to ribbons.
But they would have killed all my cavalry. But I have Swiss, so my reply was "So, there cavalry".
