I'm wanting to get into playing FOG but befor I go and buy and paint an army I'd like to know what scale most people use. I would imagine 15mm because of the price and ease of painting but am not sure since WAB seems to be mostly played in 25mm.

Greetings

What is more important is which scale the people you are likely to be able to play against use. Even if the more commonly played scale is 15mm it won't do you much good if your local group plays in 25mm. And of course many people have ancient/mediaeval armies in both scales.

There will also be outlier scales such as 10mm (often used for Warmaster Ancients) and 6mm usually on 15mm basing.

Regards
Edward

I agree I need to what scale my enemies will be playing which is why I started this thread. There is no local group that plays around here so I'll have to travel to hobby stores in other cities to find them and so want to know what scales most people are likely to play in so I'll find it easier to find games. Unfortunately the hobby shop in my town went out of buisiness years ago as did those in nearby towns. To find a hobby store that is still alive I have to travel at least 60-90 miles. Too many people nowadays that only want to play video games not to mention I am looked at like I have a third arm growing out of my head when people know I read history books for fun. From all the UK sights on the web it doesn't seem like the people in the UK have the same problem. There might be a larger quantity of gamers in the US but I think that is more likely due to the huge population difference.

If you are an ancients wargamer (or to be honest any kind of wargamer) the UK is a great place to be. It is certainly possible to get to a tournament every fortnight with rarely more than a 2-3 hour drive. There are two wargames clubs within 20 miles of where I live and if you go to a 50 mile radius there are probably 12 clubs or more.

At the moment I am having to not enter events simply because it would mean playing almost every weekend for the next two months :D

I voted 15MM, but to be perfectly honest I play in both scales. I have a large collection of Medieval stuff in 25/28MM so my Medieval armies (Normans, Communal Italian, Early Crusaders, Syrian City States, and Later Hungarian) are all going to be 25/28MM and remain so.

Since I'm starting (restarting actually - I sold my Ancient armies several years ago when I gave up on DBM) Ancients from scratch, I'm doing those in 15MM - they're cheaper so I can afford more armies, and the historical armies themselves were generally quite large, which seems to fit better in the smaller scale.

I put down 15mm because that is what the other guys in the club play which to be honest is the only reason I do it.

I have lots of 6mm plans for FOG however...

Well the poll is definately shaping up to look like 15's are the way to go. And really if I want to paint an entire army it would be a lot more practical though 25mm's just look so darn good.

Oh and by the way I'm from the U.S. so I'm only fluent in American English which I'm sure you are aware is a mangled version of English! Fortnight? I think if I remember my history classes from back in school that means two weeks?

Correct a fortnight is two weeks.

Looking at my schedule starting two weekends back:

15/16th March - The triples - a very big trade show with 100 or so traders about an hours drive away
22/23rd March - BHGS doubles Leeds - FoG doubles comp, less than an hours drive
29/30th March - weekend off
6th April - Northern League Manchester - FoG doubles comp, 15 minutes drive
12/13th April - weekend off
19/20th April - BHGS Challenge Ascot - Big comp with FoG, FoW, DBM, DBMM, 3 hours drive possibly a bit more
26th April - SOA Games day Milton Keynes - Multiple games different rules all refighting Poitiers currently no FoG game :( 2 1/4 hours drive
3/4th May - weekend off but I could go to Lille for the FoG comp there.
10/11th May - Campaign Milton Keynes - Tournament and show combined no FoG this year but I am playing FoW. 2 1/4 hours
17/18th May - FoG comp in Durham perhaps 2 hours drive
24/25th May - BHGS doubles Oxford - FoG doubles comp, 2 1/4 hours drive
31st May/ 1st June - UK Game Expo Brimingham - Fog comp and Fow Comp, 90 minutes drive.

etc.

If he spent a bit more time getting a job and less counting his weekends away he'd be able to add Helsinki to the end of that list :D

15mm for me. Ease of painting and cost are my primary motivations.

15mm for me. I have very few ancient 25mm and they are all based for WRG 6th edition. I have not seen any games of 25mm FoG here and I don't remember the last 25mm game of DBM that I saw. All the FoG players I know are DBM or DBMM converts but I am working on the WRG 6th players locally.
