Other Periods

Post by spr5858 »

Hi

Just a quick question. And I know its early days yet. But will Osprey be doing other wargames periods? My main interest is in Ancients-Medieval but I also have interestes in ACW, Napoleonic and WWII.

I am already a convert to FoG replacing my DBMM, would like to do the same with my other interests.

I'd love to see the FoG team do a Renaissence and ECW/TYW rules set. There's a huge gap right now with no good, historically reasonable rules set that covers those periods available.

We were thinking it'd do ACW pretty much without conversion...just knock up some army lists...

Obviously with a few less elephants...

Wot no Elephants?? What sort of Gamer are you

Mind you I did read some place that (I think it was King of Siam) Offered the Confederates Elephants, which they turned down. Bit of a shame, imagin what the Osprey Edition would have been like

Please no WWII or modern. I see too many DBx players trying to use DBx for every period and I would hate to see FOG in the same light.

Dunno - Warmaster Ancients was made into a pretty good WWII game - Blitzkrieg Commander - and as FoG is in some eyes better than WMA then ...

Anyone game :-)

Hi

A Thirty Years War version would be most welcome

I wouldn't like to see the FOG engine used for anything more recent than Renaissance. There are two reasons for this opinion of mine.
First FOG does not model the actions of a few soldiers, rather the bigger formations. Once hand-held gunpowder weapons were available en-masse, many armies used small detachments and even individuals in a sniping and harrassing role and sometimes their effect was disproportionate to their numbers. I think you'd need to model that in a gunpowder ruleset.
Secondly, if all periods were essentially FOG, wouldn't there be a great danger of loosing the variety that we have as wargamers to try out different periods with their own distinctive flavour? Would it not entail a "boredom" factor which is alleged to have hastened the decline of DBM?

Anyway, I know the FOG authors have a great deal of ancients knowledge between them, but I am not aware if any of them have a great knowledge of say, WW11?

Keep FOGing in pre-gunpowder I say:-)

Here. Here.

You maybe could stretch FoG into the mid 1500s when gunpowder was not dominant. But somewhere on the way to the Sun King it starts to break down.

Now I would be fascinated what a well modelled Tercio game would be, but not sure if it would work.

Making FoG usable for other periods was not really what I meant.

I was really asking if Osprey/Slitherine where going to write and publish other rule sets for other periods. Of the same High Qty as FoG.

HI there,

I think the FOG mechanisms are, if anything, better for Horse and Musket to ACW than ancients.

I'd suggest the rulesgivers, if they are contemplating another period, to get into Horse and Musket where a blockbuster set of rules and lists would be a good thing.

I personally think that FOG is good up to and including the horse and musket period including the ancient period. Any era where massed troops fight would be appropriate I think as stated above. I would be interested in a future release of a horse and musket ruleset.

The 1500 to 1660 period is the hardest for rule writer to get right. At the start you have armies which are very similar to Late Medieval armies but which quickly develop new infantry formations combining missile troops and pike. (in Western Europe at least). The problem is to represrnt thse combined formations in an easy playing manner but which gives the right balance between the various systems. The Swiss system succumbed to the Spanish Tercios which in turn were replaced by the more linear Dutch and Swedish methods.

Renaissance Rules in the past were often fun to play but did not really get that balance right. Most games were dominated by over effective shock cavalry. The later infantry based armies usually got ridden down by hordes of Gendarmes because the pike and shot couldn't combine as they did historically.

Then we got DBR which was neither fun nor historical and effectively killed the period.

If a FOG set for this period is being considered it must get this balance right.

Oh and by the way the only true scale for renaissance is 25mm so it has to work for the big toys.

There is a FoG Renaissance set under development at the moment. I suggest you take a look at the forum viewforum.php?f=70. You might even be able to get involved in the testing ;)
