Hardest difficulty level, command ability and way troops act

Post by legatus »

Maybe this is RTFM question, but shouldn't I be able to command movement of troops that after they've routed opponents, by clicking my unit and the sword that forms above enemy troops? Well, I can't. And I haven't given any orders(except maybe a signal).

I have some difficulties winning against the sabines(the 3rd battle?) with 5th level ligth infantry, 3rd level light infantry, light cavalary and one Skirmish unit.

I think I figured out how to do it, but I'm bit annoyed that my cavalry stands still nearby as my legate and light infantry get hammered by sabines that aren't awfully far away. Cavalry that just before drove away few skirmishers.

Couldn't we have somekind of order like 'go to point B, route the enemy and then turn back and support formation in center asap'?
The waypoints seem to go awry soon as enemy is spotted, or do they start to function right away after enemy is routed?

Now it seems units run to one place, and end standing still in the battlefield after fight if there is no enemy nearby, or it there isn't one enough nearby.

I like the game btw. :D

I found solution. Instead of clicking left button I click the right one! :-)

Still the set of ready orders I'd welcome. Why do I have each time after something has happened give an order?
Can't generals in real life give simple steps to units what to do?

I'm pretty sure Alexander the Great and Caesar gave addiotanal order beforehand how unit's should proceed after they've achieved
some simple object they've been given. I wouldn't need anything more than few simple step of orders like :

Go and attack unit X
Withdraw
Go and support unit Z
Avoid some unit Y, don't attack.

So I could order attack in a normal way and then given an order that after enemy has been routed,
go and support my unit Z. It would be also good if I could give a disengage order and after that they would still act by the second order.

Still I like the game, I just want to make it still better! :D

Sounds good if the engine is part of a strategy game. However, i guess that we woulnd't have much left to do if it was implemented in this game, no? But i agree that it would be more realistic and would be a necessity if the maps get bigger.

Hmmm....maybe you're right. But in a way I feel the command system is bit too good(with my limited experience).

I'm also thinking that same time, name of realism, game could be made such way the furthest troops couldn't be right away ordered.
If I for example send unit(s) to a wide flanking manouver, they necessarily wouldn't see what other units are doing or messengers couldn't
reach them. Now I can for example with cavalry send them to enemy's rear and order them there again...

And doesn't it say in the beginning in the tutorial that good war plan works by itself?

I like to improvise in the battle, but I also like to things to work like a 'clock'. I'm sure there is some in-between-there that is enjoynable.
Maybe what I've proposed could be a feature that could be chosen or be unchosen in the preferecens?

I admit that I enjoy scrolling the 3D battlefield looking as my 'master plan' unfolds. That's fun. 8)

I think you will notice that if the enemy gets close enough, your troops will leap into combat (unless they are shooting) without orders. In some situtations this can be a pain.

So what I like to create - if I have strong unts - is a large 'scrum' which most of the combat is going on. Stick my general in there to get some experience and leave the good units to it,

Meantime I am bringing my cavalry round the flanks and mopping up the odd units round the battlefield.

Putting the general without doubt helps. It improves effiency quite a lot. Real problem is that the idiot usually stays while troops around him retreat.< deep sight>.

I hate the opposite too. Sometimes the units stands idle while the enemy is murdering their friends not to far...

I don't mind if the troops get auto-engaged in combat, since I already think of that when doing the battle planning...so I get annoyed when they look around without any fighting....
