Rules feedback

Post by Seldon »

Just one quick post to provide rules feedback.
I have been playing as many games as I could fit in my schedule since the lovely books came out and I must say that I find the rules comprehensive while showing great playability. The rules are also very entretaining and the lists are colorful enough so that is fun to build the armies.
The typical issues of ancients warfare that many authors and historians present as common mainstream understanding of how these battles could have taken place are very nicely developed.
Some other positive factors that I see: very interesting set up rules, reasonable lay out for the rules and very nice organization for the sections in the book. Nice balance between armies, at least os far, very complete army lists for the initial two periods already available, finally when a game is in progress the armies on the table look reasonable and I don't see as many strange small elements doing strange stuff around the table as I see with other rules.

Overall I must congratulate authors and publishers over such a great product.

Cheers,
Seldon

Let me add my praise as well. I've only played one game, but I really enjoyed the rules, as did my opponent. I'm a long time ancients player (started with WRG 3rd Ed.) and I'm really impressed with the work you've done. It seems you've managed to answer virtually all the complaints I had with previous rules sets. Well done guys!

Well interestingly we started with the gripes we all had from 4th onwards so maybe that helped.

We're all vets too, although I think you have an extra medal by the sound of it.

I started with 2nd edition. (And I'm a doctor, not a vet  )

Damn so you have 2 extra medals!! I really never thought you looked that old Richard

Mind you I did 5 years of WW2 before trying ancients so maybe I can have half a medal for that.

I'd been playing Napoleonics for about 6-7 years before I started Ancients. Yes, I'm that old - I'll be 60 my next birthday. :)

Just to say that I too date back to WRG 2nd edition and London Wargames Section Ancient rules and then wandered off into Napoleonics and more recently WW2. I never really got on with DBM. My one game of FOG has got me rebasing 15s and dusting off my 25s for the first time in years. Clearly written, well illustrated, attractive and helpful diagrams make it a quality product. I think the game features I find more enjoyable include the use of battlegroups and the loss of lone elements, the more straightforward command and control system and the smoothing of base line-ups.

My first 25mm game is on Friday and I'm enjoying sorting out my troops...will be trying to convert my opponent to FOG as well.

I'm one happy bunny....

Hi Jay its great that you like these rules and it make it a lot easier for me when i organise next big Sherwood Forester game (09 April) which will be reenactment of !!!!!! using Fog rules. Now that we got a set of Ancient rules which can take novices and re fight some cracking battles until now i thought i could not do with DBM rules. Anyway i will see you this April for the big game.

Andy.

Yes, Field of Glory has generated quite a lot of enthusiasm around here as well, both among veterans of past ancient rules and among newcomers. We've got easily half a dozen people planning armies just from the Rise of Rome book.
