1st impressions of Ipad version

Post by beserko »

Got it yesterday, my dreams have been fulfilled!

One glaring problem though ..... I'm in the tutorial still but I am constantly getting blocked by all the information (terrain mostly) that gets in the way when I try to attack.
I have turned off all options relating to onscreen hints yet still the darn, fairly large box of info follows my finger! I wish there was an option to turn off all info. (even in the PC version) I'll keep you posted but I am incredibly impressed with this port from the PC version. :D

Thanks! Make sure you write a review on the App store as this really helps.

On the info pop up I'll ask Richard to have a look.

I think it is the tile helper tooltip that sometimes gets in the way of the order icons. It seems to happen when the action is near the edge of the screen, so that the tooltip is pushed sideways (by the program) to avoid going off the screen. The trick is to move the screen view a bit if it happens.

I mostly notice it when attacking or shooting. The popup is a big grey semi transparent box and I can see the symbols for shoot or charge thru it , barely.
Other then that I'm fine. I had no trouble trouncing the first two scenarios.
Maybe it's because it's the tutorial game and the AI wants to help. I will try a historical battle to see if this behavior continues.

still, I would love an advanced option to turn all this clutter off!

In the tutorial there are extra hints, and (IIRC) these will turn themselves on again if you go into a new tutorial scenario.

There is less clutter in non-tutorial games with helper mode off. But issues can still occur at the edge of the screen.

We will think about adding an option to reduce tooltips still further or turn them off completely.

In the meantime the answer is to move the screen view if the tooltip is obscuring the action icons.

Any chance of increasing the zoom-in capability a little bit? Would be nice to get a better look at the troops, even though graphical quality may decline.

Kudos for the great game, though.

The models used on the iPad have a lower poly count than those on the PC. Trust me, they are best viewed with the zoom levels currently permitted.

Okay, understandable! One other question- how will DLC/major updates released for the PC be handled for the iPad version?

I am not sure. Someone from Slitherine will have to answer that.

Because of the cross platform MP we generally release updates and DLC at the same time across all platforms.

Cheers

What difficulty level is considered "normal"? I was at the second level, but after winning some skirmishes it suggested I bump it up. I'm getting better at skirmishes, but haven't touched the campaigns yet, so I am not sure what difficulty would be best.

"Sergeant Major General" (the middle setting) was originally intended to be the "Normal" level, but some of the beta testers suggested the default starting difficulty should be "Colonel" (the second setting from the left).

If you want a challenge bump it up - you can always lower it again later if necessary.

I’m really liking it. It’s challenging, and my unfamiliarity with the period is getting me killed. The early 30 Years War battle where you’re defending on a hill – what should I be doing? I can’t find a way to use those Hussars, nor can I deal with enemy Tercios. What’s the right way to take advantage of height? Should I sit on the slope of the hill?

My biggest UI comment is that the popup window after a melee is helpful, but clicking on the checkbox is annoying so I usually turn it off. If clicking anywhere made it disappear, I’d be happier.

Just got Pike & Shot on my shiny new iPad and it works very nicely. Hooked up to MP with no problems, got a skirmish under way, all good here. One question, can/how does one rotate the map?
