After playing with the 1" MU in 28mm, I have to say that the size of the board seems too small, and ranges/moves too short.
I'm wondering how many people play their 28mm games with the 40mm MU on 8x5 boards as I've seen discussed on the US mailing list. It seems like it will make for a slightly more fluid playing space.
Have fun!

I have been working through learning the rules using 25mm on 4' x 6' table and the original Mu size and found I like how everything plays out. From photos of other games and such it seems that many games leave a large chunk of table empty (i.e., 'left flank refused') where with the 600-700pts 25mm on the 4 x 6 table, Roman armies never quite have enough to cover everything and those ol' barbarians seem to do so much more handily. The wider the table also just seems to see a large rear area ignored for the game.
Thanks for the comments. I'll be trying it both ways over the coming months before fatherhood reducing playing time, and come back to it. My main concern was that the narrow width of the table allows a foot army on the steps to line the table from edge to edge, which leaves only flank marches as a mechanism to work around the edges of the opponents line, which seemed very unrealistic.

At Cold Wars we agreed to play 40MM MUs on 8x5 tables. At 650 points, everyone covered the field, and frankly, if a Roman can cover the table, it is too small...
We thought the games went very well, but the terrain system has some small issues with 40MM MUs--8MUs is a long way in, and the size of terrain pieces took a few people aback.
However, int he end, it all played very well. I may post an AAR from my last game.

In an excellent Hungarian vs. Pyric game, both sides had to scramble to cover tyheir flanks. that seemed appropriate, as the 15mm players seemed to have the same issues... I would dislike seeing 25mm become the "slugfest" scale as it does in some other rules.
