Hello,
I don't know the history of this era very well, but I am interested in creating some scenarios that use armies from the areas/ppls from which I am descended, which include Alsace, Ireland, Dutch, and French Huguenots. Can anyone think of important battles and armies that involve those regions and peoples?

Hi Nimblebooks,
There was a great deal of fighting in Ireland in the period covered by Pike & Shot, and the two sides would be easy enough to recreate I think using current P&S game resources. Because the two sides went through significant changes during the period - especially the Irish - a fair bit of research would be necessary however. One of the great pleasures of recreating this period (which I've played on the table top) is that you can pit the modernising English armies of the early period against Irish armies of a more-or-less medieval character; this changes in the later period, when the Irish created a more 'modern', conventional Renaissance army themselves.
A good starting point would be 'Irish Battles: A Military History of Ireland' by G.A.Hayes-McCoy, Osprey's 'The Irish Wars' (Men At Arms 256), and the relevant section of George Gush's 'Renaissance Armies'. I'm sure that others can recommend more recent studies. An online search also turns up loads of free resources, of course.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Miletus.

PS
Here's a link to an article by Gush that covers much the same ground as the Irish chapter in his book -

Might want to check our mod thread:nimblebooks wrote:Hello,

The mod will have a timespan of 1600-1650 and will include separate Dutch and Irish armylists of this era (and several others).
