Starting Board Side

When looking at the map before the game begins in multiplayer (on the screen where you are buying your troops), how do you know which side of the board will be your side? Some games I've started on the north side, and others the south side. Is there an indicator somewhere that I am not seeing, or does the challenger always start on one side versus another? Thanks for the help.

The challenger always starts on the left (which IIRC is West).
