Steam version - Game crashes trying to launch from launcher

Post by Soar »

If I try to launch the game through the launcher, first the error popup on the left pops up, and once I click OK, the one on the right does, while the game fails to launch.

If I navigate to BA2.exe and launch it manually, the game launches fine, so this is not actually any major issue - being unable to start the game from the Steam client, since that only launches the launcher, is a mild annoyance, that's all. DxDiag.txt attached for system specifications.

Is the game installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\........?
If that's the case, could you please installed the game in a different folder than C:\Program Files X(86), like for example C:\Games\....?

How to add a new Steam library folder:

It's on a separate drive partition, under G:\Steam.

Have you attempted to start the game with your anti-virus/firewall temporarily disabled?

Disabling Microsoft Security Essentials did not make any difference.

Please try the following:
Open the folder where you've installed the game. Locate and select a file named autorun.exe. Press the right mouse button and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Run this program as an administrator.
Click on Apply and Ok. Double click on autorun.exe and check if the issue persists.

Running the launcher always pops up the UAC dialog for admin permissions in any case, but I tried doing as you suggested, and the result was the same as previously.

Has anything been resolved regarding this issue? I bought BA2 through Slitherine and the game ran fine on Windows 7 machine. Just purchased new Dell w/Win8 and installed BA2. Game does not start with autorun. Just a blue spinning circle for a few seconds, then nothing, no error messages. BA2.exe runs fine, though. Compatibility adjustments don't work either. All my other Slitherine/Matrix games seem to run fine via autorun menu.

Any ideas?

Correction. After further review, Panzer Corps and Pike and Shot do not work via autorun either. The exe's run the games fine, like BA2. What gives here?
All updates of Win 8.1 and other programs are installed.

Please check if the issue is caused by any of your Internet Security programs by temporarily disabling them.

I've disabled security temporarily while having these issues. Played around some last night with compatibility troubleshooting and discovered that the games run via Autorun menu with XP Service Pack 3 mode enabled. A couple need administrator privileges, a couple don't. Very strange. I'll continue to load some other games today and see if they respond similarly.

Not an ideal fix, maybe, but at least they're working. Any files/tests I could send that might be helpful? Thanks.

If you are seeing a 'Steam Startup Error' popup it usually means that Steam is not running, which is required.

Cheers

I'm sure you're responding to original poster, but I'm not using Steam. Just posted here as I was also having trouble after installing and saw this is as a convenient thread. The XP3 mode compatibility "fix" still puzzles me.

It absolutely shouldn't need any compatibilty mode changes, it's fully W7/8 compatible. It's definitely very odd. One thing that occurs, are you in a region where windows doesn't come with IE installed? Could be some kind of weird missing component issue.

Cheers

No, I'm in US with IE. Very weird, some of my Matrix/Slitherine games run ok in Win 8, others not without compatibility changes. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary as far as the original setup of my machine as far as I know. Can't get Decisive Campaign games to run, though, because of serial number errors. They run in safe mode, but crash after opening menu in normal mode. Matrix Support working on that one as I type.

Is there a DX or other file I could send that might help in troubleshooting whether something in my file is corrupted/missing? Thanks.

Let's go back to the start if we may. So when you run from the desktop shortcut you see the launcher panel? And then you hit the Play button but the game itself doesn't start?

Cheers

I finally got the various games to work, most in XP3 mode, a couple without changing compatibility. No malware or programs/services running in the background problems that I could figure after long analysis. Matrix support tried to help but was as puzzled as me.

To answer the last question, in Win 8 mode hitting play from the launcher would result in a short pause, then nothing. Running as administrator sometimes did the trick, sometimes not.

One year plus a switch to a completely new, Windows 10 PC later, I still have this issue. Still not a big deal, but the fact that it survived a complete configuration change is odd. I noticed the following in error.log:

Okay, I tried that, and I can confirm that running Steam as administrator does allow it to successfully launch the game.
