Scale of the game

Post by Galdred »

What will be the scale of the game?
What will one unit represent?
One detachment (to make titans and super heavy tanks unique units)? One company (but that would make very few units of Space Marines according to the fluff)?
What about one hexagon?
I disliked the fact that there was no indication of scale at all in Rites of War.

Being that its called armageddon and much like Final Liberation in most aspects seems to be a planet sized battle, and for armageddon , they have not said , least ive not noticed a post saying anything about mulitple planets. But also ive heard is going to be pretty modable so nothings to stop a creative modder From doing more if they let us create maps. This has a lot of pentential , it just depends on what kinda modding we are able to do , id like to make whole campaigns scenarios and battles , new units , different chapters the whole nine yards so the scale could be huge , just cant wait to see what the modding comunity does with this or what Slitherine does with it themselves.

I hope they let the scale open to your own imagination. The different powerlevels of spacemarines in official publications will make it hard to find a scale everyone will like.

If it's up to you how many grunts a unit represents everyone can adjust to his own "view" of 40k. A unit of Spacemarines beaten by a unit of orks? The orks were thousands, the spacemarines a 5 men squad.

You are right about the power level of the Space Marines varying wildly from one publication to the next, but on the other hand that never prevented any 40K game to have an explicit scale, whether it was a miniature or a computer game.
We are used to Space Marines being much better in the books than in any game ever made (except maybe Relic's Space Marine where 3 space marines single repel an ork invasion).
I think that the lack of any indication of scale risks making the game feel even more disconnected from the conflict it is supposed to represent.

Well , Id have to say there going with the set up that most resembles the FINAL LIBERATION game by SSI , the space marines were in 5 man squad groups , and so were the orcs, it was the standard squad that would fit in a hex. Tanks and Titans seem to be handeled in the same standard as FINAL LIBERATION as well. When it came to points though is where the ORC'S and SPACE MARINES seperated themselves , for example you would get 5 space marines and in comparative points for orcs youd get 8 - 10 orcs depending on the squads you took, so it would balance out, your not going to see single space marines in a hex, or single orcs in a hex , the five man in one hex style seems to be what there going for , showing how strong space marines will be in cost compared to orcs , so my guess i could buy more orcs for the cost of marines. This is guessing that Slitherine is taking that into account and doing the same as SSI did with that game, well have to wait and see in beta , either way i look forward to fighting it out against the orcs.

As much as I would like a better Steel Panthers 40K (I never understood why SSI dumbed down Steel Panthers to make Final Liberation), I think Final Liberation scope was smaller :
Even though the campaign took place over a whole planet (and featured orks vs humans), the forces involved were a bit smaller than the ones involved in the battle for Armageddon (something like 4 IG regiments + 1 Space Marine Company).
At least, the range of engagement in the pictures would suggest that the battles are larger in scale.
