6mm or 10mm scale

Post by pyrrhus »

Anybody playing FOG in smaller scales ? (perhaps using the same base sizes for 15mm or 25mm) this could be cheaper for newbies to get into the hobby . Patrick

If FoG is indeed as good as it looks I will be using 6mm in my games. As this scale gives the right massed effect I like to see in ancient/medieval battle. I have stopped my work on my 6mm Punic army until I decide if this game is truly for me so I don't have rebase things like elephants which are done differently then in WMA.

The infantry and cavalry are already based to, more-or-less, the 15mm scale.

I've been using 10mm for about 8 years now: I find it the best balance of figure detail and mass effect.

I used to use 6mm mainly for WW2 but although the vehicles where fine I found the infantry just too small to notice any detail. However I think 6mm will be a cheaper and faster army to prepare for new players.

8 or 10 10mm figures on a standard 40 x 20 base would not be much cheaper than 15mm, but the effect of having so many more figures with just as about as much noticeable detail is worth considering for those who have yet to decide on scale.

Hi,

I'm doing 10 mm Walachians, Serbians, Hungarians and Ottomans using Kallistras Medieval Ottomans and Eastern Europeans on 15 mm size base.

Do you put more figs on the bases than the usual for 15mm?

I find 10mm to be just about the right happy medium as well. I own three 10mm WMA armies. I have no 6mm, so I indeed have a bias. I have 2/3 DBM armies in 15mm as well. Personally I like 10mm over 15mm for mass effect on the table top.

Though if I were you I would not rule 6mm out simply upon others words.

I personally think the best route for those in limbo in scale is to order a "unit" thinking in WMA terms 3 stands (not that equates to a FOG) in each scale, paint it, base it and contemplate. I said a unit (3 stands) merely because often 1) many manufactures sell them in such lots by WMA basing standards 2) Three stands can start to give a mass effect as far being able to extrapolate the look of multiple armies.

Obviously things to consider are
1) what people in your area are going to be doing
2) tournaments if you plan on attending
3) if you maintain the same basing standards (which 10 and 6mm should have no problem with 15mm basing) then you should be able to game easily enough.

just my limited input...

Good luck

I am basing mine with the suggested number of figures given for 15mm scale.

for close order infantry i usually put two ranks of 8 figures on a 40mm base for 6mm.

if you want you could ignore the base depths and do something like this http://folk.uio.no/arnsteio/DBXin6mm/

Good luck

I wonder if there will be any *10mm* scale tourneys using FoG. With the advent of WMA, making 6/10mm more popular, I would love to see a tourney in the smaller scales.

There is nothing I can see to stop players using WMA armies in 15mm tournaments. I have seen and played against 10mm figures in DBM 15mm comps and see no issue with the same happening in FoG. You never know if a few people start using 10mm others may switch scales too because 10mm does IMO look better.

If I could swap my 15mm armies for 10mm or 6mm versions of the same (on 15mm bases) I would be very happy to do so but having about 20,000 15mm figures there is too much inertia in my collection to make me want to start to do it the hard way.

You could always volunteer to organise one. Some of the larger venues can usually supply tables for a new tournament if there is demand.

I'm going 10mm for WOTR, they're faster and easier to paint up, look great in massed numbers too!
