Newbie questions

Post by VonArens »

Hi

I've recently started playing PC without ever having played the original game (played a fair bit of civ for what its worth), and have a few newbie question in relation to the grand campaigns.

Since Im new to the game I did the Poland part of the GC on the lowest difficulty but raised it one level since it was too easy, Lt. seems to fit my current skills (or lack there of) fairly well.

But I am wondering what is possible in terms of playstyle and what to actually play, since the current way Im playing seems to have put me on a (albeit historical correct) losing path.
Im playing the GC campaigns via the 'Classified' tab (the 'more campaigns one) where I started from the top, and now just finished Stalingrad and am left with the choice of breaking out or staying (I chose breaking out). Since I got that 'you're gonna loose no matter what' feeling fairly early on, I became desperate and replayed every scenario untill I got a DV on all (didnt go to moscow tho but did DV in the other choice and also in Stalingrad), in a faint hope of breaking the historical bonds.

So in short, am I re-playing history in my current way of playing and if so, can I play in a other way while still retaining a Core from start to end ? :)

In the Grand Campaign, you always follow history, with a few minor exceptions such as Streets of Moscow and Poltava, no matter what results you get. Your core isn't so much affected by that as by how you play each scenario.

There is only one major history-breaking path, which is found in '45 West - DV in Bastogne Assault, then "Victory or Death", which can take you as far as Sealion45.

That kinda makes sense, alltho a bit of a downer after replaying all those scenarios in the GC to get a DV.. hehe

So what if I play via the Scenario tab, does this also support carrying a core of units from the start to the end? Noticed that it atleast contains events that I have never done in the GC, aswell noticed that the Stalingrad part is hugely different than the one in the GC. :)

As a fellow noob I recommend playing the vanilla campaign first. While it doesn't have the breadth or scale of the GC, it's plenty fun and has far more branching paths and some real ahistorical what-if developments that reflect your performance as a whole.

Scenario only pays the map and then it is over.
Also, scenarios are not balanced if you choose the other side.
