A new poll has been added to the BHGS Yahoo group.
For the UK FoGR players do you want the rankings to include every competition as a qualifying result (including every round of the Northern and Southern Leagues) - which is what we have done up to now - or do you want only the final league position to count as a qualifying result? The poll will only remain open for a relatively short period of time so vote now if you care.
If you want to see the impact of the changes, there are two PDF documents in the files area (in a new folder for FoGR Rankings). The one with 'Original Method' shows the rankings calculated using the 2013 results upto but not including the Stockport Pick and Mix, calculated where every round of the leagues count as a qualifying result. The file with 'Leagues Method' shows what would occur if only the final positions for the Northern League and the Southern League were counted using the same set of results. The below explains how it makes a difference what counts as a result (thanks to dave_r for the words):
'
The rankings are based on tournament results. The winner of the tournament get's the maximum score possible, with the person finishing last getting one point. The Challenge and Britcon are worth 120 points, all other tournaments are worth 80 pts.
Therefore each tournament you enter gives you a number of points. To give your ranking you take the highest four scores and divide by four - this will give your average number of points per tournament.
If you umpire a tournament then this counts as a tournament - you take your average finishing position and then work out how many points you would have got if it had been a major tournament. So if you've entered four competitions and finished third every time, then your umpire score would get calculated at a third place finish at Britcon or The Challenge. If this score is one of your highest it would contribute towards your ranking.
'
Comments welcome. I am happy to do the rankings either way for 2014. The sooner we reach concensus (sp?) the sooner I can start the 2014 Rankings generation (December 2013 is just waiting for the results of the Stockport Pick and Mix.) More weight will be given to the opinions of people who have pcompeted in a BHGS FoGR event.

Re: UK Interest - FoGR National Rankings
Hi Tim
I've put the poll on this site, as I know as the admin of the BHGS yahoo group it doesn't have much overlap with his group
FWIW my vote would be to count each 1-day round as a separate tourney. This is because:
- they are now all 3 games anyway, which is not far off 4
- if we want to encourage whacky armies, having each round separately de-risks the impact on rankings of a really bad result
- counting the series would mean it only adds into the rankings in December, and that makes the results less "live" when we aim to present the annual trophy at Britcon in August
I do however think we have so any events there is maybe an argument to up the number of events that count to 5 or maybe even 6. With a BHGS hat on, It'd be good to have Roll Call, Britcon and The Challenge count for slightly more points.... Although with my own hat on, I'd be happy to drop Roll Call this year at least!

Re: UK Interest - FoGR National Rankings
Just trying to understand the maths for my own interest (not because I have any criticisms). So if the top player in an 80 point tournament gets 80 points and the bottom gets 1 and there were 10 entries in total then second would get 70 points and third 60 etc but if there were 12 entries then 2nd would get 72 points and third 64 points etc. Is that correct? The rankings are based on tournament results. The winner of the tournament get's the maximum score possible, with the person finishing last getting one point. The Challenge and Britcon are worth 120 points, all other tournaments are worth 80 pts.
Keep up the good work. I, for one, find the rankings a very useful gauge of my year-on-year performance and something to explain my "progress" to the non-wargamer.
Thanks
Stephen

I could not be 100% certain of the exact gradation but yes broadly that is correct
