Some tips for newbies

Post by leci »

As a newbie myself, I offer the following tips:

Parachute Units: if paras are available, see where they can land. If drop zones are near supplies, a town, a target to be captured, an isolated enemy unit etc., the para units at 300 cost are a good buy. Remember to move them off there drop point and position as required - if you leave them at their drop point you will not be able to land anymore units at that position. Note that enemy units will not fire at you unless you fire first. So, land as many as required. If done well you have a good chance on this turn or the next turn to reach your objective. This strategy also splits the focus of the AI response. BUT DO NOT try to land para units where an AA gun is in the vicinity!

Surrendering: Paras are useful to surround an isolated enemy unit which will then surrender and even flanking the an enemy unit increases your kill rate. When surrounding a unit, do not fire. Note that you cannot surround two units, only one. Cheap units such as Volkstrumm units are also good for this tactic. Make sure that the terrain allows you to surround an enemy unit. This tactic is also useful when you have (on your turn) units with low ratings because they are not required to fire.

0:0 target statistics: just because target info show 0:0 take the shot. Often your fire will reduce the enemy unit by 1.

Captured towns/cities: after taking a town/city and gaining the points, if you lose the location and the retake it, you regain the points. Therefore, it can be useful to vacate a location and then retake it. Just make sure that you have suitable units in the vicinity to retake.

Katushka Rocket units: if no AA in the vicinity (or the flight path) use Aircraft to bomb. It usually take two bombing runs to destroy these units.

Enemy units with low ratings: if you, by any means lower an enemy unit rating, find some way to destroy it before the end of your turn! If you do not, the AI will supply that unit back to full strength and all your previous efforts and losses will have been wasted.
