[SUGGESTION] - Teporary files location other than C

Post by Sabratha »

I have noticed that the game leaves very large files on the players hard drive. I have the game installed on drive D, but these files appear on drive C.

They appear under the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Ja\Local Settings\Application Data\Unity\WebPlayer\Cache\MatrixGames_BASPM
("Ja" is the name of the PC user in question).

Inside that folder, there are numerous folders with long random digit&letter names. Each contains a file named "_info" and a file named "CAB-something".

These files currently are 5.91 GB. I may be wrong, but these seem to be temporary files that the game fails to remove after closing the game. Is particularly odd that these appear on a different drive than the game is installed on (and cause issues, as my C drive is very small and basically only contains my system and windows files).

Re: [BUG] - Huge files left on player's HD

Hello Sabratha,

Indeed, Unity (the engine we're using in order to develop SPM) creates a folder where it leaves all the cached resources. We could clean it up when the game exits, but then you'll need to go through the "Loading..." screen every time you launch the game.

We'll add an option in future updates so that the user can select whether to clean up the cache or not on exit. I (perhaps wrongly!) assumed that most players wouldn't mind about a few GBs being used by the game if that means faster loading times on subsequent runs. But you have a point, some people might have a short C:\ volume, so it makes sense to add an option to clean the cache.

We'll try to add that as soon as possible. In the meantime, feel free to delete the folder yourself, it won't affect the game at all.

Cheers,

Ah ok, its good to know this. Before this update the files went up to a whooping 17 GB, but it seems it was the old beta version files. I removed them and this time the files seems to stick at no more than 5.91 GB so its not that bad.

But yeah, might be well to avoid hard-coding driver directories. Best to have it by defult the same drive and folder where the game is installed and let the player choose the directory through the options menu.

I keep a very small C drive, as I learned that its a good way to minimize file loss when a virus strikes the windows or system files.
