Adrianople this weekend

Post by AlbionOak »

This weekend at the Plymouth convention we are re-fighting Adrianople 378.
Little detailed info is available for the battle which gave me a little leeway in drawing up the Orbats. Numbers were roughly similar, around 15,000 each side, maybe 1 or 2 thousand more for the Goths. I wanted a battle where either side could win and it worked out that the figures available and the figure requirements married up pretty well. We would have an 800 point 28mm battle on an 8 x 4 table.

The Goths
Fritigern IC + 2 FC
3x4 cavalry
2x4 LH (Alans etc)
6x8 Warband Bgs
1 Bg of Roman trained Goths (with the hairy head shields)
Some LF
Total – 808 points

The Romans
Valens FC + 2 FC
1x4 Cataphracts
2x4 Cavalry
2x4 LH
4x6 Legion Bgs
2x6 Auxilia Bgs
1x6 Auxilia Bowmen
Some LF
Total – 794 points

A slight point discrepancy but the Goths had an IC and part of his advantage at extra cost is enhancement of scouting ability which does not apply in this battle. We have a simple system to randomly release the Gothic cavalry and the Romans are marching at the start – not all immediately available. The fighting prowess of the Roman legionaries have impressed all in our practice games and most make them favourites because of this. I believe however that the advantage is with the Goths, for his reason.
The Roman HI/MI units are all 4 foot, supported by 2 psiloi, partly because this is probably historic; mainly because I’ve got hordes of psiloi for DBM.
In competitions I expect few Roman players to choose this option – opting instead for Bgs consisting of 6 legionaries.
So that’s it, there’s little terrain but we have found a thick cloth which looks (hopefully) like parched plain. A small cottage, (somewhere for Valens to hide) a small wood, a slope at the Goth end and a couple of tracks complete the scenario. As the Goths came out of their laager to fight we think it not necessary to represent those wagons.
Not too many bases – we intend to play slowly and promote the game to any interested parties. May even let them roll the bones occasionally!

Always glad to see reports of historical scenarios, so I'll be awaiting this one eagerly!
