huguenot 15mm figs

Howdy,

I'm hoping to put together a Huguenot army (1577 onwards so based around pistol packing Curassiers ) in 15mm and wonder if anyone has any ideas on some good figures - particularly for the Cuirassiers and Reiters. I know Essex has some - anyone know if they paint up well ? Or indeed if there are any other good figures on the market ?

I've researched this fairly extensively. Unfortunately 'not that I'm aware of' for the Huguenots. Their mounted were quite distinctive, so I feel even the essex stuff would be huguenot in name only.

My suggestion is to go as early as possible TYW and just know that you're going to be using ahistorical figures.

Essex have a specific Huguenot 'Miller' Cuirassier as MER62 and the old Asgard/TTG Miller is available from 15mm.co.uk in their Altuos range as MRC20.

I don't personally like the Essex Reiters - the armour just don't look quite right as later 16th C Trabharnisch to me but again Altuos have one as do Minifigs - I have some of each and i think they are OK - well proportioned and look 'right' but suffer from a lack of detail, sharpness and each having only one pose.

The general foot and artillery should be easy enough but bear in mind that any Landsknecht should be the later type in Pludderhose like the new range from Grumpy (shown as 'coming soon by East Riding Miniatures) or a couple of old figures from Minifigs rather than the Italian Wars style in tights.

Really this era is crying out for a nice modern range of figures with multiple variants and the extras like camp followers and baggage that are expected today.

I talked to Mr ListLurker about this being his next range and we did a small amount of market research which showed that some people were interested, but not overwealmingly so... which is a pity.

As a disclaimer, I've only looked superficially at this period as maybe next on the list - I am concentrating on building an Italian Wars French army at the moment - but from past reading and a bit of a look round:

That is a great pity as I think just a few figures would have quite a big effect on several armies of the later 16th C:

- Cuirassier with a few variants and command for the Danish.
- Add a surcoat/cassock on the same basic figures and that's the Huguenot Millers covered, also used by early 80 yrs wars Dutch.
- Reiter with a few variants - literally everybody needs those.
- Late Gendarmes with a heavy lance on an unarmoured horse with one or two pistols for the French Catholics. (Though maybe this is already well enough served by Altuos and Essex.)

Landsknechts are already covered by Grumpy and everything else looks pretty generic for Spanish and English as well so could, at a push, be covered by those. The only thing missing then would be the Royal Swiss and some generic camp followers.

Just those 2 or 3 basic cavalry figure types transforms the figure availability of the key types for French Wars of Religion Catholic and Huguenot, Early 80 years wars Dutch and Early Danish (and everybody needs Reiter). I can't believe that doesn't have a wider market than Chimu and Mochica or Mapuche.

Like I said, it is only maybe next on my list and I'm leaning more towards Early Danish (or possibly French Catholic) rather than Huguenot. The immediate obstacle is I have 42 more Gendarmes, another Landsknecht pike kiel and a Swiss kiel for my Italian Wars French to paint first. And I'm not the world's quickest painter.
