Basing Question, Barbarians

Post by sharpes »

Hello. I dont have the Beta rules, I have pre-ordered from Amazon. I would like to get a head start on converting my WAB armies over to FoG. The first army that I want to bring over is a 28mm Gaul army. My question is, how is the mainstay of the army based? For basic warriors, am I looking at 60mm wide, 30mm deep, three figures per base? I figure by the time I finish the main compliment of warriors is done, the rules will be in my hands, and I can finish out the lighter troops then.

Thanks

Gallic foot in FoG are either medium foot (3 to a 60 by 30 base) or heaby foot (4 to a 60 by 20 base). The choice is essentially an all or nothing one for the mass of warriors. Solduri and Gaesati are always heavy foot.

Medium foot are less affected by terrain than heavy foot but have slight dissadvantage in the open against equivalent heavy foot and are at a significant dissadvantage compared to heavy foot when fighting mounted in the open.

Hope that helps

Helps to some extent, thanks. I suppose I basically need to model the entire army as either heavy foot or medium foot. I think the Medium better suits my picture of these wild fellows, so I will go that route I think. Sounds like I will have a disadvantage going against Horse armies, but that only sounds right anyway. Richt then, of to rip figs from their old bases!

Thanks

Are weapon types important? In the past, I have freely mixed swords, axes, and spears for my Gauls. Can I continue to do this so long as the base size and figure count is correct? I would assume this would be OK, but want to check that it won’t give me problems with certain opponents down the road. Some people at conventions are sticklers for such things if stated explicitly in the rules. Again, I haven’t read the Beta rules, so I am flying a little blind here, but trying to get a jump on making my army playable as quickly as I can.

Thanks Again

For some troop types weapons are significant so pikemen would look odd if not equipped with pike (or halberd if Swiss middle rankers) but for Gauls a mix od swords, spears and axes will be fine.

A unit should look historically appropriate, but the specific weapon held by an individual figure isn't important. The rules require you to define a unit at deployment and anytime the opponent asks, so there is no need to "guess" what a unit is armed with.

Stand your figures in a flat bottomed dish with water up to their ankles and leave them overnight; you should then find it easy to remove them from their old bases.

Not necessarily true.
The list is split into lowland tribes (heavy foot) and highland tribes (medium foot).

A single army must be either one or the other. However, you are allowed Gallic allies from other tribes.
Hence, you could choose to have a lowland tribe with a highland ally, or visa versa.
This would give you a better mix of open & rough terrain types.

OK, well, I have my troops all de-based, guess I will have to wait for the book to release before moutning them, i dont want to have too many bases of one type or the other till I know what the heck I am doing...

Thanks for all the help guys.
