Republican Roman army list question

Post by miffedofreading »

Hi guys,

I got interested in FOG (not seen rules but have them ordered on Amazon.co.uk) and decided to revamp my essex carthaginian and republican roman armies. Bought tons of corvus belli carthaginians so i am sure i now have at least a 1,000 point carthaginian force. If anyone is considering 15mm carthaginians I can REALLY recommend Corvus Belli. I get them in the UK from tabletop games, now going under an additional title something like battle quest games?

Anyway as the carthaginians were so cool I bought roughly 100 additional legionaires from Corvus Belli. I know they are Marian but they are just so cool, particularly the sword fighting ones rather than pilum chucking ones. Sadly Corvus Belli only sell 4 legionaries packs. No velites, or Cavalry. As such I have a LOT of legionaries who can count as hastati and princeps. I think I have enough Triarii from my old Essex army. I however only have a relatively small number of cavalry and an average number of velites. I do also have some MF based allied infantry.

Can someone give me a quicky army list 600 or 800 points, 2nd punic war roman that is deffinitely legionary heavy. I probably only have 6-8 elements of roman cavalry max, though I guess I could steal a unit of numidians or gauls from my carthaginian army? I would prefer not to though.

So is a legionary heavy, cavalry light republican roman army a viable option??

I guess trying to beat the carthaginians at mounted troops is a bit pointless anyway?

The legions are definiately the way to go. So being heavy on them is the way to go.

The sample lists have to be released by the authors until Feb 15. But a few general things. Check the After action reports and you may see one.

probably better to have 6-8 bases of roman cav, but 4 is an option.

Possibly another 4 bases of LH from spain or numidians or other italians.

You need the Triarrii in multiples of 2 bases.

I found it real easy to get to 16 bases of legionaires. So don't be shy with your soon to be 25 bases. (4 each = 100). You can use some extras as geneals put you can paint them all and not regret it by much if at all at 800 points.

6-12 bases of Velites.

So you are going to be pretty close. Corvus Belli are sweet.

Have a look at the thread titled 'General Question', similar issue.

Thanks guys. I think I am pretty close, and I probably have 50+ legionary elements so I will use some for a diorama general or something

I've dug my old republican army out of the attic. Add in the new Corvus Belli legionaries and I have approx

50 Hastati / Princeps elements
12 Velite elements
12 Triarii elements
6 cavalry elements
12 MF based Italian allies
Plus a few odds and ends.

I will probably only use the 20+ elements of legionaries as hastati princeps that i am painting now, and knick all the other figures from the old army. Looks like I have enough Triarii and allied Italians. Might use an extra couple of elements of cavalry (maybe) and deffinitely looks like I need a few more elements of Velites, though I may be able to pinch some macedonian javs, they look pretty close....

Seem reasonable
