Who Fights

Post by philqw78 »

:( is charge in front by knights  and in rear by LH :P

Which bases fight in impact, is there any choice

Would the knights being wider/contacting more bases make any difference

Is this a pre-Christmas quiz?

In the first situation the attacker has 2 bases eligible to fight, the defender has 1. So It would be 1 base vs 1 base. The attacker gets to choose which base the defender must fight.

In the 2nd situation, it is now 3 attack vs 2 defense. So it would be 2 vs 2 and again the attacker chooses which 1 base will not fight and which base the left most :( must fight.

Interesting Note: Since the LH hit the rear, if you choose them to fight, they would fight at ++ for the impact. The knights would fight at their normal POA vs :( adding a + for the enemy fighting in 2 directions.

If :( is a single rank - then I broadly agree with bbotus. Page 61 seems to suggest that the base contacted in the rear must turn but I think the attacker still gets to choose who fights whom.

Although,
adding a + for the enemy fighting in 2 directions.
Only applies during the subsequent melee - not impact.

Yes, and page 97 says the player with the higher number of bases eligible to fight in impact chooses which will not fight. In this case, the attacker.

Ooo! Thanks for the reminder.

So in the first example, assuming that the LH have charged the rear as the first charge and so turned the :( base around....

If , say, the attacker then chooses that the knight base will fight, the enemy base :( must also fight. Does :( get to fight against the LH that it is facing?

I don't believe so - no.

If the attacker chooses to fight with the Knight base it will be 2 dice vs 2 dice at evens.

If the attacker chooses to fight with the LH base it will be 1 dice on ++ vs 2 dice on --.

I believe the turning of the base is just representative and it will influence the factors in the melee.

Hi Pete,

I understand that, if the attacker choose to fight with the LH, the defender turn his base front of the LH. But if he choose to fight with the knight, does the defender have to turn his base ?

And, in this case, does he fight in two direction during the melee ?

Thanks for answer :P

I don't have my rules to hand right now but when I read them this morning I'm pretty sure at least 1 base must turn if charged in flank or rear - even if the base is also in contact frontally.
But if he choose to fight with the knight, does the defender have to turn his base ?
I believe the defender's base is turned to face the rear contact irrespective of which base the attacker chooses to fight with.
And, in this case, does he fight in two direction during the melee ?
That's a definite 'yes'.

Page 61, 2nd bullet says bases contacted on a side or rear edge, or a rear corner, by an enemy flank/rear charge are immediately turned to face. If all the contacted bases are already in contact with enemy to their front, one of them is turned. So, absolutely, the :( hit in the rear must turn.

On page 97, 1st paragraph, 2nd column says that all bases contacted by a charge are eligible to fight including bases contacted to their flank or rear which can't turn because they are engaged to the front. So the :( fights the one that the attacker picks to fight (Knights or LH).

Thanks bbotus.

And to illustrate:

:D :D :D :D
:( :( :( :(
:) :) :) :)

:D are LH who have charged :( in the rear.

:( are already engaged in melee with :)

In the impact, only 1 base of :( will turn to face the LH. The LH will have 4 dice on ++. :( will have 8 dice on -- since all bases have been contacted and will fight at impact.

NB - both :) and :( battle troops.
