panzer corp 42-43 West messina

Post by patents »

I cannot win the Messina scenario. I get all 18 ground units across the straits in alloted time. Maybe my groundunits are wrong. I have 16 tanks/infantry/artillery, and 2 anti-aircraft. The other units are 3 fighters and 1 strategic bomber. (I am allowed 18 units plus 4 reserves).

Help - how do I win so I can continue to more scenarios?

As far as I remember you need to move 18 of your CORE ground units in order to get a DV. If you are moving any Italian auxiliary units and counting them in those 18 then that is why you are not winning this scenario.

It is allright to get the Italian units across. 18 ground units are required, BUT you also have to control five objectives. That might be the problem. That's why it is essential to keep alive as many italian units as possible in the scenarios before. Just with german units it is impossible to win a DV. A MV is - maybe - possible, because that requires holding only 5 objectives.

A little look on the victory conditions is helpful from time to time... ;)

Messina can be a tough scenario. My first win came only after I sold off the Italian Auxiliaries for the prestige (inspired by someone else's suggestion). This makes it relatively easy to get MV for holding the five objectives, but guarantees you can't get DV.

Apart from missing out on a possibility of DV, there are two other drawbacks to this:
First, you miss out on the opportunity for some nice reward units.
Second, for me, one of the good challenges of this scenario is getting the timing right, so that you have enough time to get units across but you don't pull out so early that the remaining holding forces get overwhelmed.

More generally, I learnt a lot from AARs early on, especially how to plan battle strategy, but for more tactical issues selective use of the cheat codes (eg for emergency resupply or an extra turn or unit) can sometimes be enough to work out how to beat a particular problem.

Air units don't count to win.
Set up deep in Messina corner to concentrate artillery support and mainland AA cover and allow your fighters to maybe protect against enemy air AND escort your naval bombers.
Bring an extra naval bomber or two.
Utilize Italian AA you have.
Wipe out enemy naval to clear strait.
Move very weak Italian units over first.
Battle out Allied onslaught to wear down and exhaust to allow last few turns counterattack recapture and meet minimum objective count.
Time last units to cross strait to get over before time runs out--these last units must be in port turn BEFORE last to make it over last turn.
