Finite Sandbox Mode

Post by DGatsby »

Hey guys,

Is it just me or does the way the sandbox mode end right now seem kind of...strange. I mean, it is "sandbox" mode. In my save before the patch I was into the '80s happily sending out probes, but now I get a fun times over message as soon as '73 hits. I like to be able to keep playing on; it won't concern me if we didn't get any more money or prestige, that stuff is easy to save up. I know that in the upcoming patches it will be changed, but I think this is something that should be addressed right away. I mean, we don't really have enough time to go through all the missions available right now within the time constraints.

It does seem strange. And I have the same kind of problem; not enough time to go much far.

Still, I can live with that for some time. Hold in there; they'll fix this little thing, and we'll be able to play till we reach Proxima Centauri!

I hope the ending line will be adressed in the future. 1973 it's very early to reach Jupiter that cost 20 seasons!

I agree. There should be a "Civilization" like option where you can keep playing even though the main game is over. This will be more useful as more programs are included. There is no competition like BARIS but even if there was, I'd like to keep playing if I could.

Sandbox seemed to me to be 'the game' I cant imagine what the campaign could be other than a us russia space race, or various scenario set ups.

I definitely agree, like Deameat said, the sandbox is pretty much just the game

I guess the campaign would include definite dates you have to reach some objectives, less funding, and a way harsher budget review which can end up firing you. I heard that someone actually managed to get fired in the sandbox, but to me it seems that either you had really bad luck and your missions kept failing, or you hadn't gotten the hang of the game.
In the sandbox, once you've reached a certain stage, you have plenty of money and you have nothing to worry about, you can just do whatever you feel like. I'd welcome a campaign in which you have to do what someone else wants; like BARIS, where in my best games I barely managed to remain on the management's good side (true, in that game they fired you only if you sat around and didn't even try).

OK, I've just lifted up the end date for the sandbox mode, so you'll be able to play indefinitely. I originally introduced it because I didn't know how to set the budget review parameters for later dates, but I've just replaced that with a formula. I guess you guys will need to tell me the amount of prestige you manage to achieve by the early 80s so that I can tune the formula accordingly in future updates! :)

Just as a reference, I'd like to say how much prestige I got in my last game, which was my most successful to date.

I did everything around Earth, everything on the Moon except Luna 15 (which I tried and failed), the Pioneer Sun, I had just launched the Mariners for Venus and Mars flybys (and of course only the first one got me any prestige, since it ended in one season).

Apart from the Luna, I only had one failure, on the orbital manned Mercury, so I re-upped the Atlas, had one more unmanned orbital test and then launched first the simple orbital and then the duration mission without a hitch.

Prestige total : 24270
