Learning the Rules...

Long time gamer, but newcomer to FoG:R, well newcomer to FoG full stop.

Approaching from that 28mm game that people spend more time arguing over the rules than playing, you know the one, but have played proper games as well..

Picked up FoG:R yesterday, have ordered the army lists book - not having it may or may not be an issue but will but using a range of odd models initially as place holders so will adapt.

Q: what is a good way to learn these rules? have had a skim and there doesn't seem to be an obvious 'in' by stripping a lot out then feeding it back in.. Whats the best place to start? Just set stuff up and work out how to move it?

For the record the book looks wonderful, and the way the rules are written looks good, just looking for a place to start.

I've always found that a process something like this works for me:

1. read the rules through
2. play a game with relatively few troop types in it to avoid confusion, don't worry about finishing the game as you're learning
3. re-read the rules to see where you went wrong
4. rinse and repeat

If you can manage 2 with somebody who has played before all the better.

Sorted, have had a quick scan of that link, will spend a bit more time on it later. I have some 15mm ancients stuff I can proxy with, failing that I have 2mm card a pen and some scissors, assuming I'm allowed to use them again after what happened last time.

Will be spending some time reading the book, the ways its done its enjoyable to read

Milton Keynes, well just outside it, also play at the Jancos club in Barnsley

Need to sort some sort of army out before playing properly.

Part of the MKWS club, not sure if they play FoG, I think they may be addicted to DBM, the warhammers, FoW etc but seem happy to try most games. Mostly thinking of this for the Barnsley club - ideal being to put a smallish force together as a few there have 15mm ECW forces and take the book up and try to convert a few to playing something other than yahtzee with models.

Hi Leopard,

There are a few of us play FOGR at Milton Keynes club - certainly myself and Jim Gibson do and have a wide range of armies to use both in 15mm and 25mm. If you want a game one Thrsday evening PM me and we'll sort out a date - I can provide both sides if needed.

When do the Barnsley club meet? I'm in Castleford so it's only half an hour away. I normally play at Halifax where we have a small core of players of varying experience levels.

Well that answers that on MKWS...

not been down for a while, new job in London will mean half seven is the earliest I can get down, assuming the trains are running right (don't laugh, apparently it does happen.. not sure when though). May take you up on the offer at some point though

Barnsley club is at Janco Toys, http://www.jancotoys.co.uk/. Club night is a Thursday till about nine, but open for gaming other nights and weekends but best to arrange something in advance. they have a forum http://jancotoys.freeforums.org/. Be careful of daz, once you meet him you'll know why, just don't mention candles. There is also one who looks like worzzel gummage... and the usual collection of oddballs a small club attracts -- they are a good bunch though and the guy that runs the place is amazing.
