I am in a slight quandary...for a large Scottish army in the 800 points range, I am contemplating max-ing out the light guns and distributing them in 2's amongst four infantry units ( to support them). Are the light guns worth it? I'm basically thinking they might help an infantry unit hold off a cavalry unit to some extent. The Covenanter horse is so weak compared to their contemporaries, I have to figure out something to make them more resilient.
Thanks in advance.

The light guns are ok but invariably they will not help you against enemy horse.
Horse do not tend to ride over Pike and shot units unless they outnumber it or have flanks.
So the threat your Pike and shot units will have tends to be enemy foot especially of the superior variety. In which case you are probably giving him 2 units for the price of one.
I have had some success with light guns behind the foot shooting through the 4 cm gap between the units.
Oh and Scottish horse are not meant to fight....... They should have a support role only.
cheers

Yes, I had already figured out that the horse must be in a support role. They should only really show their faces if supported by the commanded shot of the English Parliamentarians when making the Marston Moor list.
The only reason I was thinking of using the guns against the horse is to simply reduce their numbers...down to three stands...two or three light guns firing at least three times would have a fair chance of it.
I am basically thinking of the light guns as more 'beefy' regimental guns. Up to eight can be purchased which would cover four infantry regiments. I think I'll just have to try it against a few opponents.

22 battlegroups of poor = last place (10pts over 5 games) at britcon 2013..... Main problem was auto breaking after two bases lost not three. Fire fights versus average was bad enough, but superior... Still having nightmaresSchnockel wrote:Perhaps...but think of the bragging rights earned should you win!nigelemsen wrote:Don't go for the poor version...
However I found the 3x BGs of dragoons very useful for running interface when supported by the poor cavalry
When they reappear it will be an average with a few poor for rear support version. The light art. Not sure.... If you command out the shot and put the pike with the light art that might work to hold the cavalry 12" flank corridors
